Is it okay to do a series for yourself and friends?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by A.L.Mitchell, Apr 23, 2013.

Hello everyone, first time back for a while. I'm writing the novel, "The Final Shot", which is going to be a series with Arnold Porter, who is a ex military police officer. I'm writing it for fun, just because I love writing and I'm not looking to be published. So my question is: Is it okay to do a series for yourself and friends?

Of course it is! I'm currently writing my third draft of a science fiction novel right now, and it will be the first of a series I am hoping to sell (although it can stand alone, too). However, if I can't get it published then I won't stop; I want to see for myself where my characters go, how they develop, and the adventures they get up to. Just like art, writing can be either a hobby or a profession. If you only want to write for those close to you, go for it! :)

OF COURSE! No one can sue you for not publishing something. XD It's why fanfiction writers don't end up with a million lawsuits from the original writers of the books/movies/etc. that they're basing their stories off of.

There have been many a time when I just wrote to write. And I didn't share it with anyone else, let alone the world. So, if you can't write for yourself...

Why not? I think it's a great idea, especially when you enjoy writing your novel. Once you get the flow, there is no stopping you. So just go on with it. Regardless of your purpose in doing so.

Thanks for all the comment. I find that it's best for first if you enjoy something, then write for yourself. Then for friends.

You can, but you should make sure that they'll read it. I've had a lot of ideas like this, and they don't work out. A few people read them, but not many.

Uh, yeah of course. Why wouldn't it be? People do all sorts of things for their own enjoyment. You can do something for a living and/or do it for your own enjoyment. Either is good.

If I remember correctly, quite a few writers of children's books started out writing for their children, and not as such to be published. They did it out of love of writing and love for their kids. The publishing was something that happened, in a way, 'accidentally'. So if you love the writing process, and are prepared to put the time and effort in to produce stories for you and your friends' level of interest, then why not do so?

Who's going to stop you? The International Organization for the Prevention of Fiction Just For Fun (IOPFJFF)? Fair warning: They have been known to sit in their mothers' basements sending strongly-worded emails to each other, you know.

Hopefully those emails aren't like the one from the crazy DG sorority woman that's become infamous. (If you're not familiar, I'm sure you can google it -- it's NSFW or for children. Or for the faint-hearted. Or most people, really.)

(Even funnier is the actor Michael Shannon's dramatic reading of it.)

Michael Shannon rules. He has been one of my favorites for a long time now.
