    Too young for my MC?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Gracia Bee, Nov 14, 2011.

Because I am only 12 years old would it be alright if my MC was a 15 year old? Or even 14 or 13?
    Your thoughts please :)

Of my two characters one is in his mid 40’s and the other is physically in her late teens, but mentally she is somewhere different (beyond the point and scope of this thread). On top of that they live in different time periods then me and have very different lives, so a 12 Y/O writing about a 15 Y/O is nothing, they are very close together.

As a curiosity question to anyone else that clicks on this thread. Did you also think this was about the MC sleeping/ being with someone a lot younger?

At J.Berkley yes, yes I did.

At the OP it's no problem, that gap is negligible. I'm sixteen and most of my characters are in their early thirties/late twenties and you know they live in a different world. So three years difference is nothing.

Thanks guys that reassured me. And yes this thread does sound a lot like it means sleeping together. Lol :p

I'm turning twelve in December and I'm writing about 30+ year olds. Just sayin'.

Today there's so many movies, books, etc. that you can write about people of all ages. Heck, people even write about vampires who supposedly have been living for some 300+ years! So your age doesn't really matter, what's going to be measured is your skill.

It doesn't matter how old you are, or how old your characters are. Just do what you want.

    I'd say it's perfectly fine!
Most of my characters are younger than me, but I have some ancient characters as well, ranging from 50-200 years.

It's no problem. One of the characters in my book is a lycanthrope, and I've never been one. Although there are sometimes hazy bits in the memory, such as some late friday or saturday nights...I'll have to investigate.

    No problem at all.

I just wrote a short story about an eighty-year old millionnaire... and I'm neither of those things. ;)

It doesn't matter what your age is. It matters whether you can do it convincingly.
