I got into my preferences through trish's suggestion but my rich text edit is ticked, I tried turning it on and off three times saving changes as I went but still no use. Fingers crossed @Daniel is playing around with something - weird how it works fine on my phone though...
Yes - issue resolved - cookie and history clean-out worked wonders! I still have a small text box (an inch high) but hay-ho back in action with editing tools! happy happy happy!
Edit: In the future I really must check for new pages before I post anything... If I hover my mouse over my username a box pops up where I can choose "preferences" among other things... Try this link: https://www.writingforums.org/account/preferences At least we can still go via "Help" -> "Rules"

NEW PROB! today, the reply window turns yellowish when i start typing and the text option bar is gone!.. ditto for the 'more options' option... is anyone else experiencing this?
Sounds like the OP's problem. You are in the BBCode Editor. You should have "Back to Rich Text" to the left below the box, and if it isn't there clear the browser's cookies. And I must say that I've change my mind and now agree with your statement about the "pull down"-arrow. Just realised that it might get a little troublesome with a 4" box when posting 5k-17k word stories.
right, re the box... and not just for posting huge stories, but even just a sizable post... especially one that has a quoted post at the top, since you then have to keep scrolling up and down, to refer to it as you type your response to its various parts... as for the yellow box and no tool bar, that's back to normal again, thank goodness...
