    Naming a high government ruler

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by terrwyn, Jun 25, 2012.

I need a name for the government ruler in my newly industrialized, steam-powered city. The title "king" sounds too formal. I do like the title Jarl, but I really don't want to use that unless I have to because of it's use in Skyrim. I like the sound of the word Kaiser, but I'm not sure if that would fit. Does anyone have a list of titles for a monarchy? Also if it's any help, at the time that my novel is taking place, this "ruler" is starting to be overthrown because the people began to rebel and dislike how corrupt, selfish, and greedy this ruler is.

I like 'Archduke', I must have read a book or watched a movie with an Archduke character, because I get a sense of darkness when I hear the word.

Archduke Ferdinand, maybe. It triggered WWI. But it is an imposing title.

    Two word titles are great

    High Officer
    Royal Ascendant
    Omni-master
    ... Master Chief?

(Omnimaster is good... I surprised myself with that one. It means to be the controller of "everything")

    Beware beware the Dragonborn comes!

I like The Overlord. It is defined as "a ruler ESP. A feudal one." Kinda describes your character.

"Overlord" sort of reminds me of Starcraft. Hm, maybe that's a good direction to go in...Overmind, Praetor, Executor...hm, nah.

    There's always Potentate, I guess.
