I've been told I have *too many* gay characters!

Based on the above, an scanning back through your posts in this thread, it sounds like I did misunderstand you, and I apologize.

I still strongly (ever so strongly) disagree with you on the description and I think other issues, but it sounds like we're disagreeing on style and storytelling rather than uglier issues. So, again, I apologize.

@NiallRoach - Yeah, same here. It seems more like we've completely different ways of telling the story and we're screaming at each other about how wrong we are for having our own way. Sorry 'bout that.

I think it's important to note here; not describing a character is done. And I am willing to accept that. However, sexuality at least, is not an appearance trait. It is a feeling and (unless ignored) behaviour trait. So it doesn't apply the same way. You don't have to avoid sexuality in order to allow your audience to imagine your characters, because it's in the same category as their personality.

    Uh...I just realized something...

I just realized that my fantasy-mystery is about my MC trying to stop a psychopath from murdering members of her own ethnicity in his sick murder spree. This after all I've posted in this thread.

The irony (if not the hypocrisy) is not lost on me.

It's your novel. You can have as many LBGT characters as you want.

But I will say that if it's not a romance novel, don't constantly talk about their sexual orientation. THEN you will seem overly PC.

Well, unless coming out or discrimination is a theme.

Then how are we going to know if gay characters are taking over our fiction?!?

Or anything that involves spouses, or children, or home life, or friends or colleagues or employees or other human beings that ever talk about spouses or children or home life, or...

The word "constantly" was used. That's why I mostly agreed. Incidental traits don't need to be thrown around everywhere. There's nothing more annoying that a minority character who must constantly remind us who they are in an unbelievable way. Now that looks overly PC.

I'm asexual. When I was a teenager, I didn't like that every character in every story I tried to read was straight and I wished that the heterosexual community would stop shoving their orientation down my throat.

    And then I grew up.
Heterosexuals should have to do that too.

You can never too many "gay" characters." That's preposterous and narrow minded. Write what you want man, you have my support. Take that note of criticism with a grain of salt. If you want lots of gay characters, go right ahead. It won't worsen or bog down your writing quality in anyway.
