    Looking for a word...

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by veronica2020, Nov 16, 2012.

    Hello,

I am looking for a word that communicates this scenario:

    Two people
One person has information that is important to the other. The relationship seems to work fine, but the person that has the important pieces of information keeps control over the relationship by not disclosing the information, only micromanaging the other person to achieve mutual desired ends. The person with the important piece of information controls the other person, and intentionally keeps the information secret and constantly seeks to subjugate the other through this secrecy.

I know there is a word that defines a scenario like this, and I am sure I am not writing the scenario well, but any hints or feedback are valued.

    Thank you,

thank you minstrel, I think Ed got it right.

After researching some more, I think also, which is not a word alone as I'd hoped, "withholding of information as social manipulation technique." Which abstracts to Ed's word 'manipulation'

Landed on withholding of information as social manipulation technique after reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_suppression_techniques

I think blackmail would be more explicit - "I will not give you what you want until/unless you do x,y,x." This seems more implicit, which is why I thought of "manipulative". Also, "exploitation". Sort of reminds me of my mother-in-law.

:) Ed, I think that this scenario reveals the exploitative nature of information with-holder. Yes, I have observed in laws exploit their seniority in the life of our beloved...

I am still smiling... thank you
