    A Morning in Early Spring
    By jo spumoni

New leaves gleam from barren branches
    And a newborn fawn
Dappled with spots and tentative sunshine
    Struggles on new hoofs

We peel off our jackets slowly
Like butterflies emerging from wool cocoons
    And breath in the morning
Savoring solid ground beneath our feet

We students buckle under the weight of textbooks
Filled with old ideas and ancient history
So we can learn from those who die
    And pass the knowledge on

The Maya had the maize gods
    The Incas had the Sun
    The Christians had Christ
    And I have today
