    Just another newbie :]

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Puppet121, Oct 9, 2008.

Hello, I'm Ryan and I'm 16 years old. I've always been interested in writing a book since I was like ten. I just never took it seriously or never had the full motivation or push. So here I am attempting to at least create SOMETHING. I've role played before on sties like Gaia Online, and Solia Online and still do here and there. So I give you my welcome and hope to accomplish something.

I don't trust cookies any more.
WF has a strange thing when it comes to pastries or bakery goods.
They turn evil and start turning the members here into cookies.
    Its so unsightly.

    I have e-mail.
I guess I could get AIM.
    I'll go check it out.
    I'm scared of those things.
    How about Google chat?
I'm not on it, but it would seem safer.

Hi Ryan, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Thanks I checked out what you said in your reply and wanted to ask. Was that one sentence directed to me? "Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here." Or were you just saying it?

I say that to everyone. Unfortunately, many new members head to the Review Room first, not understanding how it works, and then get offended when their threds get locked. The Review Room forums are a writing and reviewing workshop, in contrast to what similar-looking areas are on other sites. It's not a place to post your work and have it praised or panned.

A review, in the context of this site, is not like Gene Shallit or Ebert and Roeper giving a thumbs up o thumbs down on completed work. It's an analysis of a work in progress, to try to find opportunies to improve the writing, or what parts work so beautifully they should not be fiddled with.

But how can someone be expected to understand that if they are in a rush to post their writing before they even look around.

So no, it's not aimed at you personally. It's information every member should know BEFORE they start posting. That's one reason for the message that comes up when you finish creating your account - the message that urges you to start by introducing yourself.
