    The Touchy Subjects

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Elyos, Aug 16, 2008.

The story I'm writing is probably revolving around a very touchy subject: Demons, Humans, and Angels. My main character is an Otherworlder, a Luxurian (Incubus) who seeks to become whole again after thirteen years of growing up in the human world. It is at his age of thirteen when things become so complicated, frightening, and interesting at the same time that it leaves him breathless with wonder on what to do.

It seems like a childish story at first, but I always find myself not sugarcoating what happens if someone loses a head, or if someone's being tortured, or if there's erotica (there's a lot of erotica, he's an Incubus).

I have two or three main goals for him going on at the same time, each one appearing throughout the story. I'm not really unsure of whether or not I should do multiple crises at the same time as much as I'm wondering how interesting it sounds, or how unintelligent it seems.

This goals are 1) He must become whole, but he has to do it before he loses the chance (the main villain is working against him here). 2) He learns a lot more about himself than he really wanted to, and discovers a rather life-threatening obligation to keep a sacred object sacred and out of other demons' hands, or else something REALLY bad happens. 3) He has to get rid of the main villain, because the main villain isn't just a villain, but he's a rival as well, and he is making the main character's life a living hell. On top of the main villain, there's a bigger and badder guy out there that both the main character and his rival are working against, which I spoofed the Triangle term for: The Hate Triangle.

Anything seem overdone? Thanks in advance!

A story concept means nothing. I can tell you now, it has been done before. What matters is how you write it, the characterization, the flow, the imagery, all of it.

There's no point to asking what other people think of the concept! They'll either say,"Sounds great," or, "it sounds like a ripoff of..."

If the idea stirs you, write it. Then ask people what they think of the final story. After they tell you what they don't like about it, revise it, usually several times, until you're happy with it or until you throw up your hands and say the hell with it.

Please read this thread about What is Plot Creation and Development?

(and yes, this is a template post, which should give you an idea of how often this comes up.)

It all depends on the writing.

Cog, can/did you make that statement a sticky? That the concept is almost meaningless, but it's the writing that matters more. I mean people should be able to read that. I started saying exactly what you said in red.

There is a sticky, but no one reads it before they ask this.

A touchy subject would be something like child sex or religious dogma.

Angels, demons, explicit descriptive violence and erotica are'nt a problem. As the previous poster described though that child sex etc would be. In regard the concept, it sounds great to me personally.
Although in my opinion while being thick in volume the whole angel, demon concept can be quite restrictive. Example being you're basically saying god is real and while I read or watch anything with that subject matter Im always thinking at any point he could pop right in and end the whole story with a zap =)).

Change the age to 18 and your gold.

13 is in the child porn area if there is erotic writing.

Other then that... go with Cog on that one.

Eeeewwww! I just put that together, myself. Yuck.

Touchy is not the right term here. I think Bad-Touchy is more descriptive.

The age of your MC and the goings-on in your story may lead you into legal trouble. For real-real, not for play-play.
