    KKIS

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Felipe, Aug 21, 2014.

There is a volunteer organization here that I have joined, Keeping Kids in School. Most of the people who live here are very poor, the average pay is 300 pesos a day and I mean a 12 hour day. That's almost $24.00. Most of the jobs are tourist driven and depend heavily on tips, so when the low season comes during the summer (now) their salary can drop by 80%, right when they need it the most to put the kids back in school. KKIS raises money, buys the supplies and distributes them to the students. Here is a jungle school, no electricity unless the generator is running (Two hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening)

Good for you. I wish you every success with your endeavour. Is there a justgiving page or something where people can donate?

Things like this really make me glad to be human, and really makes me see the hope and potential, and glory of the human spirit when it is doing something actually nice. :)

And I'm a cynical, miserable bastard.

School has started but we need to start gathering supplies for next year. We are now teaching English to the students using flash cards, Bingo and interaction. With Bingo, they look at the flash card, then find "Duck" or whatever on their card, reinforcing their English.

I will be moving off of the coast soon to the Sierra Madre Mountains soon just outside of Oaxaca and plan to bring this project there.
