    Mad Scientist type character

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by KRS2273, Apr 10, 2011.

Hey this is something separate I am creating from that other thread regarding the Selwick's Little Sweethearts story and that manuscript I found that I based off of it. Basically I am working on a short story (may become a novel) about a teenage girl who's parents sent both younger brothers to this behavior academy (they were sent there for pretty trivial reasons). She is upset that they were sent there and her parents decide to send her there too. Soon we meet the headmaster (Insert cool German first name here) Mandrake.

Mr. Mandrake is basically using the academy as a ground to create people loyal to his and the views of his organizations. He is an older man who's family owns a company worth billions. Basically what Mandrake Behavioral Academy does is puts microchips in peoples heads that alters their behavior so they will get painful headaches each time they do something wrong. He is doing this to put people loyal to him in political positions of power and also orders assassinations and murders. He also has 12yr old nephew (he has a psychic ability of wiping memories like the Haitian on Heroes) he uses his nephew to wipe students memories at time including those of their parents at times.

What other qualities would a mad scientist have who is sane enough to hold his position and getting away with said crimes?

He would have to be able to act and inter-act on a social level, he would need to be affable maybe even seem harmless the last guy you would expect to be a porn lovin' mad scientist after ya shared a beer with him. If he pulls his deeds off for any period of time he must be able to deflect attention and rich gazillon-airs like him get attention....look at me after Velvet Elvis became a hit all the honeys are digging on me

"Mad scientist" is a cliche for a character who is proficient with science or technology and whose goals are in direct conflict with what most people consider reasonable.

Being presumably intelligent, he realizes that his plans wouyld not be accepted by others, if known, so he carries out his plans covertly. But he may very well be arrogant and believe he is smarter than his potential critics.

He believes his plans serve the greater good. But they probably mean death or great suffering for large numbers of people.

If you want him to be a realistic character, you probably want to present his rationale to the reader in a way that almost makes him sympathetic to the reader. The reader should at least see that his logic is sound, albeit coldhearted.

Thanks :) I think what I will use as his motivations is he sees people as irrational, out of control, and illogical. He feels this way most likely after a bad experience with teenagers or as a teenager. He believes in Order (Im thinking like the way the Vorlons and Shadows have their conflict in Babylon 5) and believes it in such a way that causes him to do what he is doing; becoming well known and respected enough to get other academies started across the nation. Lots of Doctors know him, he has been on Oprah, etc. And he is smart enough not to let others know his true intentions (those that KNOW are the ones working for him too)

For the microchip I am going with an organic kind as its not detectable through x-rays, etc.

How should I make his actions and those of the academy go in ways so they are not discovered by the authorities? I am thinking of having them every so often kidnap homeless people and use the organic microchip so they will conduct assassinations. I am going to flesh out my plot(s) a bit more.

You'll need to come up with reasons for his good crediblity. Being on Oprah doesn't mean much. Calvin Klein was on Oprah once and that didn't go so well. Tom Cruise was also on Oprah. Again, it did not end well.

Mad scientists need some crediblity in order to get others to work with them. Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Moreau were well respected doctors before they started doing their questionable experiments. People do not follow a looney without good reason.
