    Unusual Onomatopoeias

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by OurJud, Sep 16, 2016.

I need the spelling a trifle would make as you spoon a dollop out of the bowl. Sorry if trifle is unfamiliar to American readers but it's a dessert comprising sponge base, then jelly/jello, then custard and finally cream.

As you spoon it out it has a tendency to form a suction action, creating a very distinct noise, but how to spell it??

I went with Sccchlop! but I'm not sure it conveys it accurately.

(I wouldn't get too hung up on this one - there's clearly no definitive right, but) I liked your rendition Jud :) Although... was that for the dollop peeling off the spoon, or the dollop hitting the recipient bowl (I assume the latter)? For this reason, you may want a two-parter, like I.A. By the Barn has suggested.

(And now I want trifle... the most elaborate thing I ever cooked was a trifle - had to figure out how to veganise every component :D Worth it!)

In actual fact @Sifunkle the 'suction' sound in question happens when the dollop is being separated/lifted from the rest of the trifle.

It's the same as the sound you get when pulling a boot out of deep mud.

Like you say, though, daft to get caught up in this. And I'm not - just thought it might be a fun question.

Ah sorry, I misread your first post! Still think it's fine, but I'd maybe go schlrp over schlop (+/- letter repeats) if the dollop gradually comes away rather than springing free... hah :D

Trifle or Truffle? I'm so confused right now, but that word you spelled sounds pretty good.
