Michael Sam drafted by the Rams

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by GingerCoffee, May 11, 2014.

... 7th round NFL pick, big kiss on camera with the boyfriend. I only wanted to update the thread but it was locked. There's not much more to say. His success or not on the field is yet to be determined.

Hate to break it to you, Ginger, but as much as I support having an openly gay player, from what I know, his success isn't that great. I doubt he'll even get a renewal, since he was one of the last to be picked.

However, if he gets renewed, I'll be quite happy!

Interesting you believe that, Duchess. Because it follows the news-commodity-for-sale focus on scandal/controversy talking points rather than his success as a college player.

This is not a shabby record:

This is good news I guess.

Hey, I just barely follow the news. I know next to nothing about football. If you said Mike was a great shortstop and so he would be a great pick because of his 3-pointers, I'd believe you.

Then why make the statement you made that he was no good? He was estimated to be an earlier draft pick until he came out.

Oh, that does explain that drop in the "picking order". It just seemed so low, but it seemed high before.

Personally, I think that having an openly gay player would increase media and revenue.

But yes, I made a mistake.

Never heard of Michael Sam or the Rams, yet, coming into the thread, I knew he was going to be gay. Ginger, you've become predictable.

There was a huge thread on him earlier, so you probably heard of him.

She also thinks she is the next Mel Kiper, Mike Mayok, Todd McShay, or Gil Brandt. I've followed football all my life and study up on it 365 days a year, but all of a sudden because she is related to Keith Van Horn who was an NBA player and had nothing to do with the NFL, she knows where Michael Sam should have been drafted.

Michael Sam is an undersized DE, and yet not athletic enough to be turned into an effective OLB in the NFL. That's why he went in the 7th round, not because he is gay.

I don't remember (or know) what country you're from, I assume it isn't the US, but your comment is childish. Sam is the first openly gay player in the NFL and it's a major current event in the US. Homosexual civil rights is a big deal in the US at the moment, so a lot of stories about gay rights are current in the news.

Apparently you are having a short term memory loss. Sam had a great senior year and was a 4-6th round predicted pick one day, then he came out and was suddenly a crappy player?

There were dozens of players with the same 5.1 score, many of whom began to be drafted starting with Brown in the 3rd round.

Sam had a great senior year in COLLEGE. If you actually followed the sport you would know that COLLEGE isn't the NFL. Sam isn't a crappy COLLEGE football player. What he isn't, is NFL speed for his size, or NFL size for his speed. You don't even know what a 5.1 score is on a recruit. You don't even understand what an NFL prospect is ranked upon. Hell, you originally said he was drafted by the NBA.

@Lewdog, the issue is not how good Sam is or what his draft prospects were.

The issue was and has always been the fact his prospects dropped immediately not because he fumbled the ball, but because he came out.

You have a guy whose draft prospects are predicted to be X. He announces he's gay. Within the hour his draft prospects drop to X-coming out.

Nothing changed whatsoever in his physical abilities or his record. The only thing that changed was his public acknowledgement about sexual orientation.

Then all of a sudden you had all the NFL apologists out there saying, if he isn't drafted it's because he wasn't that good, not because he came out.

So what made his draft prospects suddenly drop when he announced he was openly gay? I've not said anything about knowing football, the draft, any of that. I went by the evidence:

Sam's draft prospects before and after one single variable: coming out publicly.

I was just commenting that I can pretty much predict everything you're going to say. It's a simple fact.

and...BAM! Sam was a defensive player and hardly even touched the ball. So of course it wasn't about him fumbling it. Just stop. Seriously. It had nothing to do with him announcing he was gay, as you would have known this already had you actually watched pre-draft shows and such like the hundreds of hours I have. Sam announced last season before football even started to all of his Mizzou team mates he was gay. Sam himself even said that most scouts and NFL general managers already knew he was gay so it was no big deal for him to come out. Stop...you don't have a clue what you are talking about on this subject and you are disgracing every fan of the NFL for something that is not true.

Being openly gay may have got him drafted, but it'll be his play that keeps him in the NFL (or doesn't). Professional sports is the only pure meritocracy in our society, and the good press the Rams receive from his hiring won't keep him on the team. I also think he's too small and not athletic enough to succeed in the pros, but I wish him well.

    You're ignoring the evidence.

Michael Sam: NFL prospect's stock falls after coming out in a man's-man game
Whether or not being a 3rd round pick prospect was an exaggeration and whether it was always lower doesn't negate the fact coming out had an impact on his prospects well beyond whatever his actual prospects were.

I'm not ignoring anything. I'm taking it straight (no pun intended) from the horse's mouth. Sam said that scouts and GM's already knew he was gay and coming out made not a bit of a difference. AJ McCarron was the starting QB on three national championship teams at Alabama and I believe is the winningest QB in college football hisotry...he was drafted in the 5th round by the Bengals. It's COLLEGE.

You keep arguing against a straw man I'm not arguing.

Did the sports news media report his draft prospects fell when he came out publicly or not?
