So, after several months of writer's block, to the level where I doubted my whole dream of becoming a writer, I finally got overwhelmed with inspiration today! (In the shower of all places...) My new MC is a young woman, 17 years old, but in her time and place she is considered a grown woman and ready to marry. She's beautiful, but sort of in a special way where it takes the right pair of eyes to see it. She's shy, obedient, but opinionated and with high moral standards. She's kind and maybe a little naive, but the story starts with her getting a metaphorical bucket of water over her head and she has to face the coldness of the real world. These are my naming suggestions and I can't seem to pick! Nora (Beautiful, simple and feminine, but maybe a little too accosted with Nora Helmer and the feminism.) Rebecca (Feminine, yet strong and with a victorian sound to it, but maybe not at innocent as I would like?) Scarlett (Gorgeous, but too many characters with this name already?) Lola (Short and sweet, but maybe a little too simple?) Juniper (Just came over this name. Don't know if I love it or hate it. It's sweet, but I don't know if I want a unisex name for such a feminine MC.) Sutton (Again, love/hate feelings. Too masculine?)
My name is Rebecca, so I'm completely biased. Absolutely love your description of the name's attributes!!! Just don't call her Becky, please.
I'm writing drama/psychological drama. Sort of historical, as in placed in a non-existent world which hasn't come as far as ours. I mostly focus on the characters' development and how their lives shape them as people.
I think you should not limit yourself, so I give you a list of 1000 names to pick from (variety is the spice of life). http://www.baby2see.com/names/1890s.html
I really like the name, Sutton. Not for any particular reason. I just like that it's unique. But all of the choices you have would be good. They're all great names.
No strong opinions on the others, but Sutton would throw me, sounds too much like either a male cowboy or a family name for my tastes.
I guess "Sutton" since it's not a common name that I've come across from personal experience. It makes it sound more unique to me because of this.
What name would her parents give her of those you've listed? Also, it might be interesting to look up the names' origins and then decide whether or not they fit into your world. Sure, it's unlikely your reader knows what's behind the name, but I like to take these things into consideration myself when picking a name. I think I'd vote for Juniper. You'd have junipers in your world in any case, so it feels neutral enough to me.
Love Sutton for a girl! It is edgy and different, but at the same time it can blend in. If that is giving too much grief then maybe Sonnet which is close to Sutton but ultra feminine.
Thanks to everyone for helping me out! At first I wrote the first three pages using the name Juniper, but it just didn't work, so I have decided to go with Sutton. Here's a quick sketch of her if anyone's interested: Thanks again!
