The thread title says it all really. I use the standard Word font which is Times New Roman size 12 (standard on mine, at least). But I must admit, it's beginning to punish my eyes and so was wondering what you guys prefer.
I prefer an Arial font for my own use, but I have set up my "Manuscript" template to use 12 point Courier New as the base font. It seems to be what most publishers prefer. My Manuscript template is what I use for any fiction I write. It uses a double-spaced layout with indented first line on paragraphs, and named styles for types of text I may need to adjust for individual publishers (such as internal dialogue).
Yes, indeed. Though I personally dislike Courier New, that is what publishers seem to like and, also, what my Science Fiction Professor preferred because it was so easy to read.
Strange word, homely.... opposing meanings. Silly English. I use whatever the 'puter brings up. No pref really.
Times, 12. I like it for some reason, much better than Courier. I like the thought of Courier (the old school typewriter, back to basics, the antique feel kinda thing), but I have a hard time staring at it. Times is much easier on my eyes. "Wingdings, size 6" indeed. ROFL
I use a chart to decide. It cross references my reading glasses magnification with font size as I get older: (currently at 1.75...LOL) magnification: 1.25 . . . 1.50 . . . 1.75 . . . 2.00 . . . 2.25 . . . 2.50 . . . 2.75 . . . 3.00 Font size.........10 . . . . 11 . . . . . 12 . . . . 13 . . . . 14 . . . . . 15 . . . . 16 . . . . I'll quit reading!
I use my hand to write, so its a personal style. When I do type it up, I will use a wide variety of fonts. But Serif (Times New Roman) fonts are more better to use than Sans Serif (Arial) fonts because the tails of the letters is actually easier to read. Yes someone actually carried out scientific tests on this.
I have to agree. William always uses justified and it bugs me to watch the words dance around the page as they make room for other words.
Size 12 calibri - used to be size 12 Times new roman but now I have office 2007, yup, I'm boring I use the default font type of whatever program I am using.
i use the default and size 12 as well. If it ain't broke don't fix it, that is what i go by. Why change it, it is universal, although for titles, headings, chapters, i usually try to go with something that is more appealing.
...I use different fonts depending on what story I'm writing. I write my stories out by hand first, and then when I type them up, I will sit and scroll through every font on my computer until I find one that seems to fit the spirit of the story before I actually start typing. Does that make me crazy?
When I'm writing a first draft, I work in TextEdit with Helvetica pt. 12. I learned to use the program quite often at work, since my work computer didn't have Word at the time. I really started to like it. It has no bells or whistles - just a simple, streamlined text program, and I've found it to be more readable and user-friendly for what I want than Word, at least in writing the first draft. For revising, I paste the text in Word and format it in Times New Roman 12 pt.
But if you had to choose one font with which to make sweet, sweet love, it would be Calibri, right? I use Calibri size 9.
aside from spacing probs, why would you justify the margins, when ms submissions must be left-aligned?
