My brief introduction & request for guidance

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by SodaScript, Apr 17, 2012.

    Hello everyone!

I found this forum on Google and just signed up a moment ago. I hope to get answers to my questions and in time contribute back by helping others!

I am your classic definition of the most unlikely writer. In high school, I loathed English class. Fast-forward to today, and I've developed a liking for public speaking, being outgoing, and yes, even some forms of amateur writing :)

Without typing out my life story, I've fallen into a job that requires me to write content (blogging and sales copy) on a regular basis. I'm working extremely hard to produce results that the boss is happy with, but I want to 'sharpen my axe' before I continue to chop down this forest. I want to build on my budding skill and develop my ability to write.

So here's my question ... what would you guys and gals recommend for someone in my shoes who wants to learn more and become a better writer? I'm used to buying info products and courses when I want to learn something, so paid solutions are okay to recommend.

Thanks in advance, and nice to meet everyone!

Welcome to the forum SodaScript! Browse around a bit, jump in, everyone likes another opinion. Hope you find what you're looking for.

And on that note, since what you're looking for is to better your writing, I'll give you the standard answer: The only way to get better at writing is to do a lot of it. The other methods are read a lot of good examples, buy a lot of writing books, be observant, and ask us for help or advice whenever you want it. You can post samples of your work for critique once you've fulfilled the site requirements - 14 days, 20 posts excluding word games, 2 constructive critiques of other people's work. Most of us here write fiction (it seems) but there are also nf writers and many things that are said will apply to both fields.

    Anyone else?...

Welcome to the forum. The place has a lot to offer. Read the rules, they'll help. You learn by doing. You can even make your questions, an exercise in writing.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, SodaScript!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
