which is your favourite premise line?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by cstock, Feb 17, 2011.

I'm starting to build a frame work for my first novel and after putting some hours into outlining characters, central conflicts, desires, needs, etc I settled on three premise lines. I'm looking for feedback on what people like:

A dog chases a killer and finds himself travelling the world, the moon and the planets in the search for justice.

A young pirate caught in between the power struggle of two countries must rise from pawn to king to finally bring peace to his land.

A scientist has found a way to change the future only to find himself fighting a totalitarian system that he one day awakes in.

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Christian

    tee hee.

I don't know man, they could all be good or bad, it just depends on how you write it.

Does the scientist find that there's a greatest hopes/deepest fears element to his work on changing the future... and that he somehow helped materialize this ghastly oppressive world he was so keen on avoiding?

On a deeper level, indirectly yes - though I'm going more for a can't change the future without changing the present angle and wanting to control the future vs having trust that things will work out. My story isn't so much horror but rather thriller/adventure/sci-fi.

I would favour the dog story. How hairy is the dog?

Hey Christian, those all sound really great. But for me - the last one sounds the most intriguing.

Cool, sounds like a good angle... all the best sci-fi seems to adhere to a for-every-action-there-is-an-equal-and-opposite-reaction rule and there's no way around the core contradictions in human nature-- the greatest dangers lie with the greatest ambitions, like that.

Thanks for your feedback, that was helpful - though I still haven't decided which story to write first :)
