    Two punctuation/grammar questions

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Rumwriter, Mar 15, 2012.

    A) If you use a colon, do you capitalize the first word that follows?

    B) I'm editing my short story, and in it I used the phrase "absolutely identical". Is absolutely necessary? In my mind, it adds a punch, as in there is no difference what-so-ever. But to me that's what identical means. It's just that identical to me sounds a little less definite. What do you think? Is it redundant, or does it help?

    A) Using a capital letter after the colon is used when it's a place name, a character's name etc. Usually you won't need to capitalize.

    B) Less is more sometimes, the 'absolutely' in absolutely identical makes sense, but it's better to just keep it at 'identical' in my opinion.

I don't know...somehow I feel like absolutely works in this instance. No one else has any thoughts?

    B) it is unnecessary but if it flows better and works within your style keep it for now.
