    need help with a sentence.

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by heyharris1, Jun 17, 2008.

hello, i dont wanna copy a sentence from a movie so im trying to come up with one on my own and need some help :)

the one i am currently using is straight from The Lord of The Rings. where Gandalf says

" things are now set in motion which cannot be undone."

I need a sentence that says the same thing but different. hope im clear enough. i pondered it all day at work and cant come up with anything on my own.

basically a chain of events has started and cant be stopped.

    thank you all
    jim

When is your story set? What Gandalf says in that scene is rather old-worldly...do you need the same type of wording?

"Things are now set in motion which cannot be undone."

Depending on the setting the line could go a few different ways. Here are a few examples:

I fear that we are now in the hands of destiny.

Where we stand now there is no turning back.

The door closed, the lights went out, and the cold tip of a pistol pressed against the small of my back. I knew one thing was certain, things sure were going to be interesting from now on.

We've past the point of no return.

    And my personal favorite:
    I like soup!

Great point Libby...this made me laugh. Here are some possibilities:

    Black subculture setting:

"Leroy, you done bit the bad dog! He's gonna git you fo sho now!"

    England:

"My word, lad. Even the Queen would find it impossible to remedy your actions."

    US...deep in the Appalachian hills:

"If'n y'all kilt the past possum on earth, then where ya gonna git dinner tomorrow? Well, Billy-Kay, y'all just kilt that possum. You's screwed!"

Italian (yes, Sicilian) Your MC approaches a very old man, slumping in a huge rocking chair. With each breath, you can hear the moisture accumulated in his lungs :

"Sit down, my boy. There's something I got to tell ya, and I'm not so sure you're a gonna like it. Come closer so I can see you." The MC leans very close to the old man's mouth. "You're a screwed!"

    President of the United States:

"I did NOT have sex with that girl!" At this moment, his secretary whispers in his ear...something about a blue dress. "Oh crap, I cain't get outta this one."

Low ranking control operator in a nuclear power plant on the phone to his wife:

"Honey, the boss says it going critical. Yeah, tell them I loved them."
