Need help with my book title?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Cailinfios, Jan 27, 2014.

So I've just finished a novelette, named Conundrum. My plan is to write two more novelette's that might slide into novellas that would be named Enigma and Quandary. Then I want to publish or self-publish them as one book (separated into three.) But I can't think of a name for the three combined! I want a short, catchy title (preferably just one word) that was to do with the theme.

If you're curious, the series is set about five to ten years into the future, so its a mild sci-fi. The first book is written in first person, POV being Siena Marksman, a homicide detective. The second book will be written in first person, POV being Siena's friend Melanie Branwen (studying to become a homicide detective). In both books the MC's investigate a murder or a series of murders that seem to be isolated but are really collected to the "big bad guy's" master plan. In the last book they work together to take down the antagonist, unveiling what she was planning all along.

so its probably a little early to be worrying about the book title, since I haven't written Enigma or Quandary yet, but I'd really appreciate some suggestions.

I'm currently considering The Sympathizer, since that's one of the pseudonyms the bad-guy (or woman, actually) goes by.

My advice is to finish the other two novelettes first. Worry about coming up with a title at the very end (it might even come to you in the middle of the writing process). The actual novelettes are more important than the title.

... and try really hard not to use the word chronicles in your title. Like, seriously. That word is burned out in titles.

Conundrum, Enigma, and Quandary. Winston Churchill joke, perhaps? ;)

follow the good advice given above and stop worrying about a title for books you haven't written yet...

The Impasse, the Crux, Deadlock ... I don't know if these are helpful or just words that sound cool to me.

@Wreybies - Damn, I was going to title a biography of your life, The Chronicles of Wreybies. Now I can't. :(

ima agree with the others, in waiting until the end to chose names, ive just finished the first of at least 2 novels on the same timeline, and have only just considered names for it... i have the overriding name for the series, until today, didnt have a name for the first novel. write, and you will be surprised, you may even change the name of the story as well

I agree as well. Titles can wait, and if you happen to decide to go the traditional publishing route, or sell enough via self-publishing to get noticed, the publisher will most likely develop their own title. I changed my title a total of three times before I settled on Black Gives Way To Blue, a name taken from an Alice In Chains song that I feel fits the plot perfectly.

Sometimes I can't even start writing something until I have a name for it. I might change the name later, but it's like writing a character with no name, couldn't do it. For some people, the name can't wait til the end. We all write differently.

I think sometimes a break from writing is needed and doing things like thinking up titles can be beneficial.

Ummmm how about Myster3 as a play on mystery which has same meaning in a sense as your other titles lol its late and brain gone.
