    Hello from Overland Park, KS

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by authorsassistant, Jul 2, 2008.

    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to stop in and introduce myself.

My name is Julie Barnes a Certified Author's Assistant. I work virtually from my home as an author's assistant. I love everything about books - reading, buying, looking for, researching, looking at my bookshelf :), etc. My favorite genres are self-help, most non-fiction, fiction and business. I enjoy working with author's that publish in these areas.

I also attend authors event locally in the Kansas City area. I just became a member of The Writers Place.

My goal in the future is to write a self help book so I'm also trying to learn as much as possible.

I also enjoy reading the Writer's Digest magazine.

    All the best,
    Julie Barnes

I want to welcome you, again, and introduce you to the Non-Fiction, and Resaerch threads you can find on our site. Everybody enjoys helpful feed back and is more than willing to reciprocate, but remember this, "a post for a post helps the whole forum," and you should review before you post a thread of you own, it builds character. Have fun, and may your words flow and your keys never strike back.

Hello Julie, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

When I saw your name, I immediately thought of mystery author Linda Barnes, but I don't suppose there is much chance you are related to her or her husband Richard.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    welcome to the forums, julie!

i'm curious about who actually 'certifies' such 'assistants'... i was a writing consultant in my old life, with private clients who paid me obscene amounts of money [up to $150/hr back in the '80s!] to help them with just about anything that took words, or provide whatever they needed in the way of writing and i've never heard of any 'certification' program governing such services in any of the 50 states... so, who/what is it that 'certified' you?... and what did you have to do to qualify?...

i'd be happy to help you with your self-help book, so if you need a hand or advice/info at any point, just drop me a line... i do it all for free now, by the way...

    love and hugs, maia
