I've said many times how I wanted to write a novel but I never started writing one until now. An idea recently popped into my head partially based on some childhood memories (I'll admit to being over 50) and complemented with some literary suspense. I laid out an outline for the first half of the book, started writing, and joined this forum. There's a lot to learn and absorb such as POV, tense, writing dialogue, etc. but I'm having fun with it and I plan on finishing my novel.

    Thanks,

    Denny

Hello Denny, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Hello from another over-50 from the Bay State.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

    Glad You Are Here!

Welcome. Like you I'm over 50 - and I like the interaction (I'm hooked on a couple of Word Games) - but there's does seem to be a plethara of young folks. No issues - it makes it interesting - but certainly more fatherly than contempary.

I do hope you enjoy the site - and explore. And don't hesitate to ask about shortcut language that is sometimes used - I find the folks here very nice about answering basic stuff - without making you feel like a twit.

Hey Denny welcome to the forum. I'm Thehedgehog but Hedge or Greg will do. A most sincere welcome to the thread. What is your novel about and what do you in general like to write and read? Anyways, welcome to the forum. Catch you later.

    Cogito,

I've been lurking around for a few weeks and have been more focused on General Writing and SPAG. I have enjoyed some of your posts and your blog on dialogue and POV have been very helpful.

Today I was looking around the Reviewing Forum ultimately planning to post some excerpts. My problem is I don't feel qualified to review some else's work so it will be quite some time before I go back to that forum.

I also don't have anyone that I know to help review or critique my work so I will continue to read, study, rewrite, etc. to hone my work.

Overall, this is a very good forum with some good ideas and resources.

    Denny
