    Do you have recurring dreams?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Wreybies, May 23, 2008.

    I do.

    Here they are:

    The Dream of Buildings

I started dreaming of buildings after I lived in Templehof AFB in Berlin, Germany. In my dreams the buildings are large and simple in design. They are not tall like sky scrapers; they are sprawling and massive like government buildings and usually of white or grey polished stone. Sometimes they are the focus of my dream and sometimes only the background. Always I am trying to get inside the buildings if I am outside. If I am inside I am not trying to get out. In my dreams I think of these buildings as ancient and perhaps containing knowledge. When I see them I often think about how they came to be. Who could have built them and what could I learn of these people from their creations? I am usually comforted by the presence of the buildings. Their size and weight seems solid and grounding. These dreams are usually very quiet and don’t have many people in them. I know that Templehof is obviously the source for the theme of these dreams. I loved that building. An entire Air Force Base under one roof. It was huge. Once you learned the back ways, hidden passages, and tunnels you could get anywhere and never go outside.

    The Alien Dream

My parents took to me to see the movie Alien in 1979. I was nine years old. Yeah, scarred for life. I have dreamed with that creature ever since. The creature always looks the way it is supposed to, but sometimes it’s just another person in my dream and attempts to do me no harm. Other times, it is the creature as it appears and behaves in the movies and it is chasing me. Once I dreamed of a large Victorian house. The house was white and sat in a field surrounded by trees. There was no furniture within the house and only light drapes over open windows that moved with the wind. I dreamed that I lived here and that upstairs, in my room, the alien slept in my bed. It was connected to a television via many black cables and I could see what looked like vital signs coursing across the screen. Somehow I knew that I had to take care of this creature, that it was ill in some way. I obviously wanted no part of that. I left the room where the creature was sleeping on a cot and came back in a few minutes later. The alien was gone. I knew in my dream that the creature had woken and jumped out of the open window in the room. I ran to the window and waved away the curtains that billowed into my way. I looked down onto the lawn at the side of the house and saw the creature fighting with a bear. I knew that this was more trouble than it seemed because the alien would impregnate the bear with more aliens that would continue to propagate.

    The Dream of Fish

I have dreamed of fish, off and on, since I can remember. Usually the fish are in shallow water and always they are of a prehistoric nature. They look like ancient lobe fined fishes or placoderm fishes (I've dreamed of them so long that I learned these names long before the Discovery Channel.) They are rarely menacing but sometimes I feel a strange blend of fear for and of them. Somehow I am afraid that in the waters where I see them they are going to die and that would be something very bad. But at the same time I do not want to touch them because their strange appearance frightens me. They often look at me from the shallow waters where I usually see them. Their great eyes, which are more human then they should be, beckon my help. I don’t know how to help them. Once I dreamed of sitting under water within the mouth of a cave. Two huge fish, like goliath groupers, spoke with me. They had great wisdom they wished to impart to me. I listened intently and took in everything they had to say. Of course, this great knowledge was lost when I woke up.

    The Levy Dream

I do not have this dream as often as the others, but often enough. It takes a few different forms. The common part is always a very high walled levy or canal. Sometimes I am worried about the water coming down this canal, that it will come rushing in a flood. Other times I am just watching the water or things swimming in the water. Sometimes this dream and the Dream of Fish are the same. I am impressed by the size and presence of the canal in the same way that buildings in my dreams impress me. The strange form of this dream happened for about a month. The dream seemed like a film negative, with color and brightness in reverse. The dream I remember best was one where the walls of the canal are a brilliant glowing white. It is deepest night and there is a bridge over this canal. I am looking into the deep black water from the bridge and then from the side of the canal and there are great glowing white creatures swimming in the water. I have no idea what these creatures are and I only see their backs when they break the surface like whales. They glow as brightly as the walls of the canal and are of the same luminous color. I am only vaguely afraid of these creatures because of their size and the fact that I cannot see them completely. The water is like black ink and any part of the creatures that is below the surface is completely invisible. I have a fear of water that I cannot see through IRL.

Another time this dream took the form of a deep levy with vertical walls seen far in the distance. There were also large buildings in this dream. I was, of course, drawn to the buildings but I was afraid to approach the levy. I continued anyway. As I approached the levy I could see that there was a fence enclosing it on both sides. The levy ran to the left and right as far as I could see and so did the fence on each side. There seemed to be a complex bridge like an ECP that crossed the levy with a turnstile entry door, not unlike the one I remember from the training facility at Goodfellow AFB at the entry to the SCIF areas. I did not really want to cross the bridge. I looked to the left and in the very far distance I could see that a huge torrent of water was coming down the previously dry levy. The water was coming so fast and in such a great amount that it had piled up on top of itself in a huge wave. I tried to turn and run back the way I had come but found that I could only move very slowly as though the air around me had become syrup.

I only have one reoccuring dream. I am walking with my father and grandfather. We always seem to be having the same conversation but I can never remember what it is.

I have a few recurring dreams, but I don't think I could describe them in quite this much detail. Beyond the common ones, anyway.

I keep a dream journal, otherwise I too would be unable to remember any of this detail.

Oh this a good thread Wrey!

    I have two.

This first one I have had since I was about eight or nine years old to three nights ago.
~I am swinging and I am swinging so high I can see the whole sky...there is nothing else, just beautiful blue sky, and I am so happy. I just keep swinging, but, I start to feel like I am losing myself to the sky...it's like I am going to disappear into the blue if I don't stop. But I can't..no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot get off that swing. I eventually wake up to a sweaty mess.
Still, after all of these years, I can't figure out that dream.

    The other dream...

I am on a bridge that I am trying to cross, however, it is always washed out with the most beautiful, clear blue water...I look down at it and say the same thing every time, "When the water is gone I can cross."

It's strange how I can keep dreaming these and not understand them...:)

I have quite a lot or recurring dreams. One that I have almost every night is where I die...everytime I am mauled to death and when I wake up from the dream after being brutally murder I am in tremendous pain and can't breathe....it's a pretty intense dream.

Another I have is one i've had since a small child. I am playing a game of parce the parcel. There are all these children that are a variation of myself...some very gnarly looking too....o_O....anyways, each time a layer is opened, I have to try and fight through a problem in my life, if I fail I begin to fade....I have it literally every night. It is very disturbing at times.....

I have very disturbing dreams, and the details I wouldn't ever share....too....ermm....disturbing.....

I sleep like a block of concrete, for the most part. I only rememebr my dreams if I'm extremely stressed out, or sick with a fever.

I wish I were that lucky Cogito. I remember all of mine just about, and in GREAT detail....I remember that much detail from some of my dreams, I could tell you the colour and type of soil beneath my feet in the dream....every word spoken, almost every detail.....I don't get much decent sleep I'm afraid...

I don't have recurring dreams, but I do feel like my dreams are following a plot. Somehow my dreams are intertwined with one another, usually one part of one dream affects another part of another dream. It's very strange and complicated, yet familiar and simple at the same time. I feel like, in my dreams, there's a part of me lost somewhere in them that I'm trying to find. Like a distant memory waiting to be unlocked and released into my conscious thought.

Then there's also my idea that the places I go to in my dreams are also connected. I always tend to be going somewhere I've never been to before, and it always feels like I'm just running around a map my brain has developed for me. I'm sorry I'm rambling, but when you bring up the topic of dreams I could go on and on. To answer your original question one more time though, no I don't have recurring dreams.

Mine is a reoccurring nightmare. I've had this one that has scared the heck out of me since I was five and going through my "I'm deadly afraid of dying" phase.

It started where I went to a lake and Tim Curry (Yes, the actor) was a life guard. But since he is always the bad guy in movies, he wasn't trying to save people, he was going to try to drown them. I was trying to run away from him and then I saw my mom in this strange and unfamiliar car with the window rolled halfway down. And Tim Curry is there about to shoot her. I tried to tell her, "Roll up your window! Roll up your window!" Though I don't know what good that would do against a gun. But she wouldn't listen to me like she couldn't hear me, and Tim Curry shot my mom. Then I found myself in a crowded room with all of the Muppet's and the light started to flicker and then it went out. It was very dark and then I woke up.

I was five! And I actually had this nightmare after I watched Muppet Treasure Island. That's why Tim Curry and the Muppet's are in it. He has always scared me in that movie and I have been afraid of him ever since.

I don't have recurring dreams. I do have really vivid, epic dreams, though. The whole night, each dream will find a way to connect to the others. So, if I wake up at all, it's like I can jump back in where I left off -- or find some wacky way to connect them. It's weird because my "cast of characters" is a whole bunch of people from my life, but they all play a whole bunch of different roles. Some nights, a girl might be the villain. The next, she'll be my girlfriend or something completely different. So, no real recurrence in dreams, but a whole lot of plot and character development.

I don't believe I've ever had a recurring dream, but I've had some very specific themes that pop up frequently enough to be disturbing - particularly because one of them has to do with all my teeth falling out  (the scenarios are always different, though).

I have a friend that dreams in serial. :) She has part one of a dream one night, and the second part another night. I always thought that would be pretty awesome - imagine leaving a cool dream on a cliffhanger, but knowing that in all likelihood, you'll dream the conclusion another night!

I don't so much have recurring dreams as recurring themes. Some of those are:

    * Being outside when it suddenly gets very dark--the sun is still out, but it goes dim and seems to give off no light, and I can't see anything around me; it also often gets windy; I run stumbling around trying to find my way back to the house.

    * Seeing weird patterns or objects or clouds, etc. in the sky and taking pictures of them with the digital camera, often having some sort of camera malfunction.

    * Returning to school; I often don't know what classes I have, where they are, where my locker is, or miss the bus or some such. Also, if I'm getting ready to go to school or to leave a class, I often have to pack a lot of things in my bookbag, and can never seem to get this done.

    * Wandering through a large house with a hall and many rooms in sequence--often lately the house belongs to my brother for some reason, and there's often an office or library or something at the end with a mysterious old man I want to meet.

    * The ground or floor caving in. This happens even to our hardwood floor which is atop a basement--it gets sinkholes. My parents are usually oblivious while I'm anxious and upset.

    * Someplace in the house being overrun by insects or pests.

    * Having to call 911 and not being able to get the number right.

    * Having to use the bathroom yet the only toilets are within public view or are otherwise inappropriate. Often there are lots of people around.

    * People, often children, surrounding the house outside and peering in the windows. I try to keep out of their sight by going into rooms where the windows are covered, but they always somehow see me. This dream is very stressful since I have bad social anxiety.

    * Suddenly realizing that I have a pet, usually a hamster, that I've completely forgotten about and have not been tending to in possibly weeks. The pet is usually fine, just a little hungry, but I always feel terribly guilty.

    * Finding rotting bodies just lying around randomly; I always feel terrified and anxious.

    * Coming across something I wrote or drew, or something relating to me, long ago, which I have absolutely no memory of creating; I get an unreal feeling of wondering why I can't remember creating it, and wonder if there are parts of my life that are missing.

    * Lots of themes involving water, usually lakes.

    * As a child I had recurring dreams about little fires starting up on the floor, wandering the place where my dad works, tornadoes, hidden rooms and tunnels, and smelling a really horrible smell that I knew was the smell of death. I still dream these occasionally but not as much.

For some reason lately the dream where I'm wandering through a house which belongs to my brother (who moved away years ago), usually to find either a bathroom or to locate the mysterious old man in the back, is frequent; no idea what it means.

I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting.

For a while mine were about the Jewish revolt. They were really vivid as if i was in 1st century Jerusalem. A lot involved running away from Roman soldiers, and i always awoke out of breath. Theyve kind have gone away now.

I often dream of getting killed by a shark. No matter were I am in dream world, as soon as I see a body of water, I realise there is a huge shark in there and always end up falling or neing thrown in. Scary, but I'm kinda used to it now.

I also dream alot bout huge rollarcoasters and soon as they start, I realise Im not strapped in properly. Only my panicked grip keeps me from being thrown off.

    LOL for Al B.

    I haven't had a vivid dream in months... =/
I do usually have one dream that keeps popping up and it has something to do with haunted houses. It's pretty dull.
One theme that does happen a lot though is zombies. I'll have weeks were for several days in a row I'll have horrifically creepy dreams about zombies. Sometimes there chasing me and other times I'm just completely mauling them senseless. I prefer the latter...

I sometimes have a recurring dream that I am running away from something of which i have no idea, im running along the top of high sand dunes, and thats all I do, run around the coast along sand dunes, reef, and then all of a sudden im bodyboarding these tsunami sized waves with people that i know, but dont socialise, after the boarding were suddenly locked up in this ancient makeshift jail cell in the middle of nowhere, we escape and are then trying to hide from hideous creatures in an abandoned school.

Ive tried to figure this out, all i can put it down to is that this dream is a relay of all of the things that bother or affect me somehow, like running away from problems and my fear of swimming in the ocean, and how when i lived at home i always felt as though my bedroom was a jail cell.

I had a dream last night which, of course, I've had before:

Basically I, and a large group of people are spread out on "land", or a playing field. There are streets and houses in the centre, to the north are grassy hills with trees and other hiding places and to the bottom, or south, is a river system and "old mill".

The aim of the game is to avoid being seen and, subsequently crushed, by a godzilla-like monster that heads back and forth through the playing field stealthily, trying to catch you out. Even though I'm dreaming, it feels frightening real, and the tension as I crouch behind an object, or hide amongst trees, as a giant being walks slowly past is almost too much for me. But the thing that I love about this recurring dream is the thrill of walking down the abandoned street in complete silence. You can assume the monster is currently searching the south end while you're in the middle section of the "map", and therefore you're going to need to find a place to hide before it can catch up to you and kill you. And when you start taking risks it becomes one hell of a game/dream. I have more fun in that dream than I've ever had in real life.

    Yes, this is strange.

    Haha, weird.

I don't remember many of my dreams either. The ones I do have are more like nightmares and always involve computer malfunction (particularly the blue screen of death = my greatest phobia) and viruses which actually kept me awake pretty much all night last night (or morning technically, whatever). The stupid thing about these dreams is I'm actually a computer geek and spend half my day on one or reading about them. Yet, these stupid dreams scare me to hell and back.

Oh man i hate recurring dreams. Iv'e only had one or two, but the most prominent by far is where im on a battlefield and have a bunch of bullet wounds, and i can barely hear everything happening around me like im underwater or something. Faint screaming and artillery shells goin off are the only sounds recognizable. And then i just die, fade to black kind of thing, lying in the mud and seeing people die.

Iv'e always wanted to go to the army since i was eight, but this dream is nagging, like a premonition. But it's really not gonna stop me. It's so wierd.

My dreams don't really recur as it the same dream over and over, instead I have aspects, such as the setting which are the same, ie a castle, or one person in them, but my dreams in that place usually follow on from each other chronologically in a sort of random story.

You ever have a dream where you wake up and it feels...symbolic? Important?

I dreamt of this slide from my childhood. You know the really big ones that go vertically down at first? Normally made of really polished wood? One of them. When I was little, I didn't have the guts to go down. In my dream, I got to the top and still didn't have the nerve. So i went to the end of the platform I was on. It looked like a short drop, so I sat on the edge and dropped off. It was then that I realised I was 4 stories high. I landed on my feet, feeling both legs snap on impact.

When I woke up, it just important.

If it is symbolic, I think I know what it is telling me. I have to take the plunge, because not doing it, or trying to go back, will hurt me more.
