    The Loneliest of Birds
    By nomadpenguin

I can only imagine what it must feel like
    to burst into flaming life
    while the ones you love
    crumble into black ash.

I can only guess at what sorrow
    wracks his fire plumed frame
every time he remembers the passenger pigeon
cocking her head coyly to one side,
    or the lovely pterodactyl
    fading into stone memory.

    But it is
    the falcon, the penguin,
    the thrush, and the partridge,
soon to become imprints in a museum,
that forces pearly tears from his beady eyes.
