    Not enough words

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by WhenIt'sDark, Mar 29, 2013.

    Hi,

I just finished chapter 3 of the draft for my latest novel. I must say that this is the most serious I have ever been about a story and I'm really happy with the idea and plot. I am fairly new to novel writing and I have a problem. I planned out my story and it will have 9 chapters. After finishing chapter 3 my words count is aprox. 15.000 words. If I would continue this way I would end with 45.000 words, which obviously isn't enough.

I was wondering if this happens to you and if I should worry about this at this early stage. Do you have any advice on how to 'beef up' my story?

    Thank you,
    WhenIt'sDark

Write the first draft and don't worry about the word count.

There will be ample time for filling in, and taking out, while revising your 4th, 5th or 15th drafts.

Just don't pad it out to make up the word count. You may have a good short story.

Yep, last thing you should be doing is writing a story to fit word count.

The story should be as long as it needs to be.

But, 45k for a first novel isn't too short, and is quite fine.

Tee hee. Oh yes. After all, the art of writing is in the rewriting. *grins*

if it's targeting the YA market that word count is not a problem...

if it's adult fiction you will have to get it up to at least 80k... i don't see how you can know it will have only 9 chapters when you haven't finished it yet... don't lock yourself in to such rigid parameters... let your story develop on its own... it may be that you are not setting up your scenes well enough and adding more description can up your word count... and/or adding a subplot or two can make the story more interesting, while giving you the length you need... or you might just be writing too concisely...
