    Non-fiction writer aspiring to fiction

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Tenderiser, Aug 12, 2015.

    Hi all.

I'm a 26 year old from London. I'm a professional bid writer so I spend all day writing and editing non-fiction, which I really enjoy, but I've also been a stop-start fiction writer since I was a child. I would like to finally get a novel finished and see if I have any potential as a commercial fiction writer.

I'm currently working on a suspense romance. I wrote from January to April and ended up with a 90,000 word draft, then gave myself a break to focus on finishing the first year of my master's degree. I'm now back on it and have about 30,000 words of my second draft done.

After this I have GOT to get an extreme horror novel out of my system. I have found a couple of authors I can rely on in that genre but there is a real lack of good stuff out there. To be fair, that probably reflects the real lack of readers interested in extreme horror, but I'm not in it for the money!

I joined because I'm really stuck with a particular point in my story. I've posted a thread about it in the plot development sub-forum. I'm sure in another couple of months I'll be ready to post a few chapters in the workshop and get some constructive criticism. I'll also be in there to read other people's once I've found my feet.

    Anyway, hello!

    Welcome to the forum, Tenderiser!
Hah, sounds like you've already read the rules. ;) Awesome!

It also sounds like you'll fit right in here. I'm sure other members will be more than happy to interact with someone who already writes for a living. Suppose it's something a lot of us hope to be able to do some day. :)

    See you around!

Thank you! I love Drop Dead Fred, one of my all-time favourite movies as a child. I really hope they don't go through with the Russell Brand remake... shudder.

Russell Brand remake??? No thank you!

What exactly do you mean by "extreme horror"? Can't say I've come across the term before. I'm a horror fan, so I'd love to read what you've got cooking up.

It's just horror that goes a bit further than most with either the situation or the graphic description. Think Hostel compared to The Happening or something!

    These are some examples:

Ahh I can't get my links to show up! It was Endurance by Jack Kilborn and Monster by Michael Bray and Matt Shaw.

I thought as much. It's the kind of stuff I've mostly heard referred to as "Splatterpunk".

Your links show up just fine for me. I may have to check those out.

Hey! Drop Dead Fred has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. :)

Also, if you could write a decent horror novel, I'd totally read it (unless it's torture porn). Not my genre now because I'm a bit jaded by the offerings of the current market.

If I did write one it would be torture porn-y. I'm so bored with mainstream horror because everything has been done to death. It seems like every other new horror book out there is zombies, yawn. That's why I seek out those authors that are doing something a little different, pushing the boundaries.

Got to get this romance done first though. I'm nothing if not inconsistent. :)

Blah! Why?? Torture porn is the easy way to "do something different." It's the "different" that everyone's doing!
