What song is rich in metaphor?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Myst, Jul 24, 2007.

Anybody can think of a song that has numerous (legible) metaphors?

    help me out here.

For figurative language and wordplay, you want a lot of show tunes and rock.
"If I Were A Bell", Guys and Dolls.
"Luck be a Lady," Guys and Dolls.
"You Can't Stop the Beat," Hairspray.
    "Ladies' Choice," Hairspray.
    "Carrying the Banner," Newsies.
    "Signal Fire," by Snow Patrol.
"Bad Case of Loving You," by Robert Palmer.
"Bull in a China Shop," by the Barenaked Ladies.
    "Your Song," by Elton John.
    "Just Push Play," by Aerosmith.
"The Tango Maureen," Rent (Simply cuz the whole song is a metaphor)
    "Rag Doll," by Aerosmith.
"Love in an Elevator," by Aerosmith. (Admittedly, all these Aerosmith songs are about sex, but aren't they all?)
"Lady Madonna," by The Beatles (Listen to the weekday lyrics)
    "Piano Man," by Billy Joel
"She's Always a Woman," by Billy Joel
"Don't Ask Me Why," by Billy Joel
"The River of Dreams," by Billy Joel
    "Storm Front," by Billy Joel
"Baby Grand," by Billy Joel and Ray Charles.
"Expressway to Your Heart," by The Blues Brothers.
    "For You," by Bruce Springsteen
"Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)," by Bruce Springsteen.
    "Jungleland," by Bruce Springsteen
"Make Your Own Kind of Music," by Cass Elliot
    "Brick House," by The Commodores.
    "Lovely Ladies," Les Miserables.
"Have You Ever Seen The Rain," by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
"Southern Cross," by Crosby, Stills & Nash.
    "Landslide," by Fleetwood Mac/Dixie Chicks
"Riders on the Storm," by The Doors.
"Life in the Fast Lane," by The Eagles.
    "Desperado," by The Eagles.
    "Hotel California," by The Eagles
    "Superman," by Five for Fighting
"Time Machine," by Grand Funk Railroad
"Rock the Boat," by Hues Corporation

...and that's just up to the H's. I can go through my iTunes and give you more, if you want...

    Vulcanize the whoopee stick
    In the ham wallet

    Cattle prod the oyster ditch
    With the lap rocket

    Batter dip the cranny ax
    In the gut locker

    Retrofit the pudding hatch
    Ooh la la
    With the boink swatter

If i get you in the loop when I make a point to be straight with you then
In lieu of the innuendo in the end know my intent though
I brazillian wax poetic so hypothetically
I don't wanna beat around the bush

    Foxtrot Unifrom Charlie Kilo
    Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo

    Marinate the nether rod
    In the squish mitten

    Power drill the yippee bog
    With the dude piston

    Pressure wash the quiver bone
    In the bitch wrinkle

    Cannonball the fiddle cove
    Ooh la la
    With the pork steeple

If i get you in the loop when I make a point to be straight with you then
In lieu of the innuendo in the end know my intent though
I brazillian wax poetic so hypothetically
I don't wanna beat around the bush

Put the you know what in the you know where
Put the you know what in the you know where
Put the you know what in the you know where
Put the you know what in the you know where pronto

Nope, can't see a single metaphor there.

Ha, well this doesn't nearly compare with JetBlack in the dirty category, but it's along the same lines - The Fez, by Steely Dan.

    The only lyrics are-
"I'm never gonna do it without the fez on,
    Ah naw.

That's what I am, please understand,
I wanna be your holy man."

    Ha, use your imagination.

Haha, my mom hates that tune with a passion, so whenever it comes up on the radio or on my dad's iTunes, he turns it up loud enough to be heard throughout the house. >=D

One song I like is called "Rum is For Drinking, Not For Burning" by Senses Fail - I'm SURE it's a metaphor for something (throughout the song) but I have no idea what!
