Cop by day, Writer by night

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Nick Self, Jun 3, 2012.

    Hi all,
I'm an East Texas Sheriff's Deputy by day but a closet writer by night.
I grew up hating reading, mostly because I was forced to in school. One Saturday morning I was bored and wondering around the house. The cable was down so TV was out and it was raining outside so sports were out of the question. I asked my mom what I could do and, of course, she told me to clean my room. I was 14. No 14 year old wants to clean his room but I was so bored I cleaned it anyway. A hour later I went to my mom again and complained of boredom again. She was walking by the book shelf so she pulled out Michael Crichton’s Lost World, handed it to me, and said read this.
“This thing is huge!” I said. “No way I can read this whole thing.”
“Then just read the first chapter” my mom said, walking away.
So at around 10:00 I started reading the first chapter, then the second chapter, then the third, and so on until lunch rolled around. My mom told me to eat lunch. I told her I wasn’t hungry and kept reading. Dinner rolled around, again, I told her I wasn’t hungry but she made me eat. So I scarfed the food down to get back to reading. I had been bitten by the bug. Later that night I was hiding under my covers with the book and a flashlight still reading.
I’m still reading nonstop today and have a very active imagination. I’ve dreamed up quite a few books but never put anything down on paper, until now.
I look forward to talking with ya’ll. And from what I’ve already seen from trolling the forums, this forum is really going to help me in my first writing attempt.
    Thank you
    Nick Self

Hey Nick, welcome. A cop as a writer, I think you can bring a unique voice and perspective.

Hi Nick! In the very near future I'll be applying to a few police and sheriff departments. With a Bachelor in Criminal Justice, being a cop has always been my goal. But I too am just getting into the world of writing. Two very different worlds and its nice to see a kindred spirit. :) If you don't mind me asking, do you plan on using a pen name? I want to only because I want to keep my the two worlds separated. What about you?

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Nick!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

    thanx all

CBorlain - Someone else asked me that a week ago, and it got me thinking. It got me thinking, and I don't really care who knows I’m trying to write (except my wife, more about that later). In fact some of the other deputies found out I’m trying this and have been giving me some ideas, some good, some bad, and some completely ridiculous, but they did give us a good laugh.

BonanzaGirl1 – I’ve never written before. I’ve always daydreamed stories up but never written. The story I’m starting on now is a adventure/ drama. But I’ve 2 science fiction stories rattling around in my head.

I do have a question… has anyone here had to hide the fact that they write from their spouse/life partner/whatever? How do you deal with it?
