[[OUTDATED]] Theme Idea Thread For Poetry Comps

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Poetry Contest' started by Torana, Jul 26, 2007.

Ok everyone I thought that this may be a good idea and honestly think that it will help me out quite a bit.

So if any of you have any ideas for a poetry contest and you would like to suggest it, please leave a post with your ideas here in this thread.

It seems to have worked well for the short story contests so hopefully it will work just as well for the poetry contests.

Also it saves sending a pm and the pm's accidently being deleted and thus me losing the ideas that you have.

None of your ideas will be left out.

Thankyou all very kindly in advance.

    Torana

these could work for the short story contests as well...

    - alternative ideological viewpoints
    - mute, blind, deaf characters
    - character's sex opposite of author
    - time travel
    - alternate history
    - monster hunters
    - alien character viewpoint
    - small child viewpoint
    - foreigner viewpoint

    strictly poetic...

    - use of alliteration
    - strong focus on metaphors, similies

just a couple i thought off. one idea i do have is flicking through a dictionary, picking a random page and picking a random word, and you have to write a poem based or includes that word. would be fun to try :p

    dragons
    magic
    lonliness
    being scared
    rain
    forests
    swimming
    the moon
    the universe

Someone told about method this where you write a story from a random, fiery quote that leads the entire work. Though that would probably be a bit better for short stories.

Say, someone catches you with your pants down at work... and that's all you're given. There are so many ways that could possibly go. Just what the hell was that character doing? Maybe he caught fire... maybe the boss is back there too... maybe it's come-to-work-with-no-pants day. Who knows??

Love. Let's try and see if someone can write a love poem without making it sound too cheesy. xD

That's a good idea adamant. Got anyone in mind?

And by the way, the next few contests are going to have themes taken from here :)

Not anyone in particular - you can use a variety over time and have each person do one selected work to change; have them choose to alter the work of a particular poet/song writer; or just let everyone find their own inspiration and judge how close they come to emulating as well as the quality of the work.

I write super-long sentences. :) MS Word says I average about 25-30 words per sentence. Haha.

So you're suggesting an open contest? Each entrant chooses a poet whose style they attempt to mimic?

    That could work...
