    Silent Protagonist

Discussion in 'Research' started by Malisky, Sep 24, 2016.

Has there ever been written a novel with a silent MC? I don't care if we get his/her thoughts or not, but I want him/her to be completely mute. No straight forward dialogue for him/her. Do you have any novel recommendations? I've been flirting with the idea of making one of mine unable to utter a single vowel and I'd like to see how other people handled the narration of a story with such a protagonist. My personal preference would be in third whatever, but I don't mind other POV's.

    The Wheelman

    Silent protagonist.

    There is also...

    Motherless Brooklyn

But Lionel Essrog is not mute. He has Tourette's syndrome so his dialogue is relatively limited. This book is a really fantastic read regardless.

Both sound interesting. The first one, kind of resembles my story in a sense of components but I doubt it's very similar... I hope... I got to check it out now. Thanks.

This sounded complicated. The list of characters is big but I'm gonna give it a shot.

I really like it. There are lots of protagonists, but Nick certainly has his own story line.

Not quite the same but I read a brilliant YA book when I was a teen called The Raging Quiet. The narrator speaks but the other MC doesn't.

...actually, I think it was YA (I was 12/13 at the time) but thinking about it, the narrator might have been too old for that. Anyway, I really enjoyed it.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Haven't read this in a while but the mc is a deaf mute.
