    Part of your space ...

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by cutecat22, Jan 13, 2015.

We've talked about writing spaces, private versus the sofa, messy versus tidy but what about other things like rituals (and I don't mean drinking blood from an upturned skull, save that for the masons ... :) ).

Is there anything you do out of habit while you write?

I listen to music (all different kinds)
If I'm writing in the study, then I light a candle.
I prefer to write by a very dim light or lamp and I have my laptop screen brightness set to the lowest point.
And I have a favourite coffee mug!

(Yeah, I know, you don't need to tell me I'm strange, I'm a writer, being strange is a prerequisite!) :)

I generally listen to thunderstorms on youtube to keep me focused.

Lots of music. I can't have anything to eat or drink with me, it's too much of a distraction. And I gotta have my feet propped up on something.

I goose step once around the room at the end of each paragraph.

I currently can't maintain a single seat or place that is "mine" to go to whenever I want to write, so I have no choice but to be flexible about it. The one constant is that I always try to have music playing. Often I write when there are other people in the same room or if I do manage to get time alone I can still usually hear small noises that bother me. Music helps block all of that background noise out.

I like to pick a song that fits the tone, time, or setting I'm writing about and set it to repeat while I write. After a couple of plays I tend not to notice it too much and I feel it helps me to maintain focused on what I'm doing.

Also, if I can manage it, a cup (okay more like an entire pot) of green or milk tea while I work is always welcome. ;)
