    "Like" as a Suffix Closed?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by lostinwebspace, Mar 17, 2013.

Haven't been here for a while, but here I am with a simple question.

Do we close the suffix "like" or leave it hyphenated? In other words, is it "stone-like" or "stonelike"?

    Thanks, everyone!

To me, that looks like a matter of style. Do what you think is best.

    By the way, welcome back!

Check a dictionary for existing standards on any particular word. If there is no existing standard, I would favor the hyphenate.

Words such as "childlike" already exist, but with "stone-like" you are coining a new use, and you need the hyphen.
