Tell me if this is original

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by JCarmody, Mar 3, 2009.

I know this is kind of a vague question that really doesn't pretain to plots but I'd like to ask it.

I decided to take a whack at it and write a story based 35 years in the future in a post-apoctolypic world. It takes place after The Gear Depression II. During the second Great Depression World War III breaks out and a total nuclear war follows. A new biological weapon is invented that infects humans and turns them into ravenous zombies (like George A. Romero's creatures). So basically a large portion of the earth's population is killed and the world collapses. The U.S. turns into a Socialist nation. Only the small pockets of civilization on the east coast survive because the rest of the nation was over run by the infected.

Thats the background info. The story follows a young student that was selected by the government to be trained as a doctor. But the rest of America was destroyed by the infected. The student flees America some how to Europe with a cast of characters. They travel the world trying to find a rumored city that is supposed to be basically free and prosperous. There is a lot more that needs adding and Im figuring that out.

Do you have anything else to improve the storyline? Is my plot good and is it original?

I think it is done quite often. However, it's all about execution. Whether it's good or bad is up to you.

A story concept means nothing. I can tell you now, it has been done before. What matters is how you write it, the characterization, the flow, the imagery, all of it.

There's no point to asking what other people think of the concept! They'll either say,"Sounds great," or, "it sounds like a ripoff of..."

If the idea stirs you, write it. Then ask people what they think of the final story. After they tell you what they don't like about it, revise it, usually several times, until you're happy with it or until you throw up your hands and say the hell with it.

Please read this thread about What is Plot Creation and Development?

(and yes, this is a template post, which should give you an idea of how often this comes up.)

So don't worry about the outline or originality. Just write it - that's where the quality will blossom, or fail.

I think the backstories a little complicated, if you managed to do an original or unique spin on zombies I would be very interested

    I second this.

Everything has been done before. What is original is the way you do it, what you do to it and what direction you decide to approach the story.

Sounds fun. But I think you should make it a small pocket on the west coast that survives. LOL. :p
