    Plural?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by A2theDre, Jun 1, 2009.

I'm moving from my current city soon and was talking to a friend who lives where I'm moving to and told her that she'll have to "show me how the city parties."

Is that right? I think it is, but it just struck me as odd when I wrote it...

It seems correct to me. "Party's" would be incorrect, of course, so there is no other option...

Parties is the third person singular present tense of the verb to party, and is therefore used correctly. There is no plural (or possessive, NewGuy) involved.

Show me how the people of this city party.

A city can't party, but the people in it can. :p

Arch, you're a smartass :p City was used to include all facets of the city, people, culture, etc.

Thanks for clearing that up Cog, it just looked funny to me!

even though it's spelled the same as the plural, in that sentence it's not a plural at all, just a form of the verb 'to party,' as cog noted...
