To cheat or not to cheat?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by MarchOfMephisto, May 23, 2011.

    Hi everyone,

I'm struggling with picking between two plot lines. There's two characters, Maria and Kevin, who are both fifteen. They started dating and after a drunken mishap Maria has ended up pregnant. Now, I can either have Kevin find out that Maria has actually cheated on him. Or have someone tell him that but she having not actually done it and the other person confesses they lied later on.

What do you think would work better? Either way, the baby is definitely Kevin's.

I don't mean to be harsh, but it's your story and since you're the one who is going to have to figure out what to do with it after you've decided on this plot point you should probably decide on this one yourself as well. Write whichever one works best for you, or write them both and see which one came out better.

A drunken mishap...I don't think I've heard it called that before.

I dunno. How about send me the story, sign over its publishing rights to me, and I'll go ahead and finish it for you, eh? :p

Seriously, your story, shrug. Just write it. Both ways, if you need, to see which works better.

Which story do you WANT to write?

Have you ever sat listening to a storyteller, and she stopped and told you she wasn't sure which waty to end the story? I think not!

YOU are telling the story. It is your decision and no one else's.

Sad, but unfortunately it does happen. More often then anyone would like.

Happens all the time. Well the actual actions do anyways, not always ending in pregnancy. At my old high school it seemed like every year there was always that one girl who ended up pregnant. Well I suppose all I heard were the rumors.

My sister's fiance started having sex at 14, and I have a friend who teaches that age group, and she has several pregnant students. Sad, but it happens...

As for trying to decide if she should cheat or if it should be a false rumor...I feel like that's kind of a defining part of your characters personality. Is she the type of girl to run out (at fifteen) and cheat on her boyfriend, or is the the type who would never do something like that? No one can decide that for you. You need to get to know your characters and work it out for yourself. :)
