Help needed with quotation: exclamation and question mark

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by bone jaw, Jul 4, 2008.

    Hello all :)
I checked out several googled sites, including all those on the first three pages, but none of them really had the answer to what I'm asking.

My question is, what is the correct way to use quotations when it comes to someone expressing exclamation/excitement and questions?

I have some general ideas of how to do it, but none of it looks correct:

    A)
    "Wow!," said Bob.

    "What?," said Bob.

    B)
    "Wow!", said Bob.

    "What?", said Bob.

    C)
    "Wow,"! said Bob.

    "What,"? said Bob.

    D)
    "Wow!" said Bob.

    "What?" said Bob.

or is it none of the above?

I know this may seem like such a minor issue, but I am trying to write a short story which uses some quotations, and this has been bugging me for some time now. And I don't really feel comfortable saying something like:
    Bob said, "Wow!".

Even though I know it's still correct and all, it just...doesn't really sit right with me:redface:.
I would really appreciate any kind of help I could get on this.

Rebekkamaria is right. At the end of a piece of dialogue, you have one punctuation mark, inside of the quotation marks.

Think about it this way, "If you ask or exclaim, no comma before name" ;)

Thanks guys. Now, at least one of my many writing deficiencies won't be so big of a problem for me anymore. :p

the easiest/best way to learn what's correct is to read/study the best work of the best writers... that way, you can see it all right there in front of you and will 'absorb' the rules 'n regs without having to actually be 'taught' them...
