    Other word for telekinesis.

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Wreybies, Jan 17, 2017.

It's a writing day, finally, and I've need of mentioning my protag's telekinetic ability. I don't want to use the word telekinesis to name it, though. Too sciencie. It's my fantasy piece. The register needs to be lower, more common language. And I'm going for a noun, not a phrase to describe the action.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

Oof, that's a tough one. How about "Reach" with a capital R? I'm thinking your looking for like a "shining" equivalent?

Yeah, spot-on. "Reach" is actually much better than anything I've come up with so far, and it plays nicely with what they call telepathy: Silence. The two words feel like they come from the same palette, if that makes sense.

Yeah, perfect sense. The Silence and the Reach... I can dig that.

But I like Reach, to be honest.

    Reach works for me.

I've used mind-touch for telepathy in the past, so in that vein you could have mind-shift or something but IMo Reach or The Reach is better

    Yep! :-D

    So far I have:

    Silence = Telepathy
    Reach = Telekinesis
Projection = Projection (don't know about that one)
Heart = Empathic Ability (that one's a little cheesy)

I'm open to suggestions on the two in blue. That's it for powers in this story and they are all of the low-level sort. With the exception of two characters, powers have very short range, 10 - 15 feet. Telepaths can only speak with other telepaths through silence. No peeking in on normal brains.

Maybe Feel with a capital F instead of heart if you want them all from the same palette as Reach

ref projection - what does that one actually do ? It feels like it might be covered by the others anyway

ETA: if you were going with that palette, Touch would be better than Silence.

    The Touch to join minds
    The Reach to move objects
    The Feel to empathise...

And bingo was his name-o! :-D :agreed:

It's astral projection, but I hate writing that because it sounds so Shirley Maclaine-ie.

Long story short: Teven has Reach and Projection. He uses both on the fishing vessel where his doting pop is captain to find (Projection) and guide (Reach) the fish into the nets. This is what makes for the great success of Carl, who owns the fishing fleet and is the economic and sibling rival to Lady Petla, who owns the shipyards where that fleet was built. I didn't think Reach was enough by itself to explain how he finds the fish, and by extension, the rather detailed descriptions I've written of his underwater work. :bigconfused:

"Burn" for empathy? Like I burn when you burn... or something. Not too sure about projection... still not sure what it is.

"Reach" is too common of a word and could be confusing.

"Mindlifting" could work. The merging of two simple words to describe a phenomenon or technology is common with the scientifically undeveloped.

Huh, I thought "Touch" would be good for empathy. "He Touched her and felt a jumble of confusion and fear." It'd be confusing at first, but as long as you capitalize it, people should catch on.

I'm sold on Reach, that's for sure. It works so well in various syntaxes precisely because it already comes with a battery of structures.

"He can do nothing. He has no Reach."
"His Reach is unprecedented. No one has such range."
"He Reached to the shoal of silverpins, herding them along the current."

It just works really well, so, thank you for that one, @Homer Potvin.

A comment made yesterday by @big soft moose made me think about whether empathic ability needs to be its own thing or not. It could be part and parcel with Silence. There's a scene where Amila, who can speak in Silence, reaches out to Tevin but finds only a blank of muffled emotions, no ability to respond. Maybe that's how people with no Silence appear to those gifted with it. That would cover both.

    Hi,

For projection how about scrying? Look into the water, see the fish.

    Cheers, Greg.

If I understand astral projection correctly, you almost become a ghost when you do it and your body appears dead or in a deep sleep, so maybe you can call it Ghost?

He'd also scare the **** out of Doctor Who fans (like me) who have already become familiar with the term Ghosting :)
