Publishers and agents don't respond

    Well you should have done that BEFORE submitting, but plenty of agencies don't have auto-responders for submissions, so this won't tell you anything.

    All you really need is a return receipt.

    The average reply time for a publisher is never. The reply time for a potential literary agent is from 4 weeks to 4 months. It is a good idea to query ten potential agents at a time, and as each reply to decline the potential partnership the writer can send another query to another agent. Most agents are already fully engaged and cannot take on more clients.
