    Punctuating Dialogue in dialogue

Discussion in 'Dialogue Development' started by peachalulu, Jun 9, 2015.

I have a scene in my story where my mc is giving a long dialogue, but it's a story he's telling and characters are talking in the story - like a fairy tale. But I'm not sure how to do the punctuation for this. I was thinking using this - '
    As in -
"The queen said to her manservant, 'Fetch me a blanket.' " - This is just an example.

Would this work? I don't want to use quotes inside quotes as I would think it would look too busy. But is quotes inside quotes the right way to do it?

The way I've seen it done is to use quotes within quotes. If you use double quotes (") for normal dialogue, you'd use single quotes (') for the dialogue within the dialogue, and vice versa.
