    Punctuation after "?" or"!"

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by writerdude11, May 18, 2013.

Hey guys, I just learned that it may not be correct to put any sort of punctuation after a exclamation point or a question mark, my grammar book says this is true but being inexperienced in grammar, I was wondering if i could get clarification from fellow writers on here. Thanks and have a good day.

It is ok to put punctuation marks after a ! or ? at the end of a sentence as long as: 1. the punctuation marks are quotation marks; 2. the punctuation marks follow another sentence

I think it depends where you live. Doesn't US and UK punctuation have different rules on this? Cogito did a blog post in more or less this issue: https://www.writingforums.org/blog.php?b=294

Only quotes can come after exclamation and question marks.

UK and US rules are the same for !s and ?s... they only differ for ,s and .s, in re going inside or outside the closing "... but even there, the US rule is being followed more and more often these days, in the UK...

Oh right. But, doing either comes off a bit clunky, so I'd rather start a new sentence instead.
