    Alternative names for Pegasus

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by elfdragonlord, Oct 6, 2007.

Can anyone think of an alternative name for a pegasus? Other than 'winged horse'. It would help if it sounds majestic and beautiful somehow.

    Equuala

Equus + ala (nominative) would be (or is near to) the Latin for winged horse (Eqqus=horse, ala=wing)

Equuleus is kind of cute. It is a constelation named by Ptolomy meaning "little horse" it might be a nice nick name

    its a start any way

Isn't a unicorn a horse with a single horn on its head? A pegasus is a winged horse.

Pegasus is from Greek myth, not sure where unicorns are from - but they're different creatures (though you could blend them, I suppose)

nice suggestions, people:) Mostly centring on the latin for horse.

I did toy with Equestavir, from equestrian and avis (bird) but your suggestions are better.

I might use one of them:)

btw - some other ideas I had were 'Sky Steed' and 'Sky Horse', at least for ordinary people's name for the creatures.

But Sky Horse sounds way to ordinary for the official name of the creature and Sky Steed makes it sounds like people ride them on a regular basis, which doesn't fit the wild and lofty nature of the beasts in my story.

I might use Equuala, actually - it's got a nice sound to it. But keep the suggestions coming

Unicorns are from North Africa. It took a few centuries for them to accepted into European folklore.

I'm wondering, since the Pegasus is similar to the chariot that follows the sun... supposedly chasing the moon in an never ending cycle, could you name the Pegasus something liek "Dawn Chaser" or "Sun Charger" (okay, bad) "Moon Follower," or something of that ilk, not based on the fact that it is a horse with wings, but more on its function?
