    Questions from the noob.

Discussion in 'Erotica' started by erw255, Sep 28, 2015.

So I'm new here, and I was wanted to clear up a few questions I have. First, at what point does erotic fiction become porn? Is there even a distinction? Also, are there things that are taboo even in places like an erotic fiction forum (like writing about underage characters, for example)? I don't even know what laws exist regarding that kind of thing, or if there are any. I wanna know my boundaries so I don't step outside them and get myself in trouble.

Okay, I noticed in the rules it states that no sexual content involving kids, but what constitutes a 'kid'? Anyone under 18, or is it a little more flexible than that?

I would say that you should err on the side of caution, and consider a 'kid' under the age of 18. :p

I see. I had a project I was working on, but the youngest character in it is 15.

I'm not sure why you would write erotic fiction involving minors ... unless your into that stuff of course.
Try not to get into the kinky details. A reader might feel guilty getting aroused by something erotic involving kids or teenagers. Unless that is your aim, be brief, but clear.

Personally, I'm into a very wide age range, but the characters are that young because the story demands it. It's difficult to explain without having anyone read it. Some readers feel guilty about reading erotic fiction at all, regardless of the age of the characters. I sure as heck feel guilty writing this thing (my mother would cry if she knew), but at the same time, I've never had so much fun.

Besides, in some states, the age of consent is 16 (like the one I live in). So an adult can legally have sex with a 16-year old, but writing about fictional characters that young is forbidden?

I'm not trying to contest the rule, I'm just trying to explain why I would even need to ask.

And to clarify, the teens are having sex with other teens, not adults... if that makes any difference... which I don't see why it would.

Really? It's pretty graphic and the only sex scenes involve said teens. I don't know if that changes things.

Again, I just don't want to get in trouble.

It's a risk, but shock value has been used for good in the past.

Okay. It's still unfinished, but I've got about 30+ pages written so far.

As to the question about what's taboo where, I would just look at the place where you want to post it and see if they have any specific rules on what is and is not allowed. Some might say, nothing with minors, no gore, nothing extreme, etc. Each place is different.

And I do think there's a line between erotica and porn. To me, at least, porn is created specifically to arouse the reader. It doesn't necessarily need much set up/plot/or character development, since the purpose isn't so much to tell a story, but to excite. Erotica, from what I understand, is more like traditional storytelling that includes sexual situations/sexuality as a main theme or as the thrust (no pun intended) of the story.

I have two answers for you, one that applies to the forum and the other that applies to the publishing world because it feels a little unclear as to which you are asking.

    In the forum

The forum has legal dynamics about which it must concern itself if it wishes to remain a valid, active entity in the digital world. Our rules come directly from a wish to stay well away from the edge of danger. You are writing a longer work, yes? If you plan on posting excerpts for critique, err to the side of caution. You know how old the people are. It's ingrained in your knowledge of the mythology of your work in progress, so it's not something you can divest or disabuse yourself of, right? But we don't know these things. Is an excerpt you are going to post necessarily going to have a reference to the character's age? Most of the work I write is erotica and you will find numerous posts of mine in that subforum, but rarely is anyone's age specifically mentioned. I know how old they are, but it's for the reader to extrapolate this information because I'm not about to post the whole WIP on-line. Remember that this a place to improve as a writer, not a place to display your work like a refrigerator door covered in magnets and classroom artwork.

    In the publishing world

There are tons of stories out there with young people engaging in sex. You just need to find the right place to have your work considered and appreciated.

There are as many opinions regarding the answer to this question as there are people giving opinions. You will never, ever get a single straight answer. Most of what I write is considered too "hard core" for may people, and yet to me it feels restrained. *shrug*

Okay. Thank you very much for your comments. So... How do I get started? (Here in the forums, I mean)

Go to the Forum Rules, the link for which was given in the welcome PM you received from me. Everything you need to know is in there. ;)

Thanks for your comments. I must admit, I'm still a bit reluctant to post it. It's already been rejected from one erotica forum already.

Um... is incest permissible here? That's why it was rejected from the other forum.

Well, you can't post it yet anyway. You need at least 2 weeks of membership, and a couple other qualifications first. Read the Forum Rules to find out when you can post a piece of your larger work. In the meantime, I suggest reading many of the pieces already posted in the Erotica subforum to get a feel for what is generally accepted here.
