I wondered about the grey blocks meself when I checked my rep points. I asked Cogito, I think, and he said it was because the person that gave the reputation either didn't have enough reputation themselves or were just new.
lol well not everyone wants people to know they gave them rep. I think that it is best that way so that people don't feel uncomfortable.
That's true, but I like to return it I think I figured it out anyway. It doesn't make me uncomfortable
Ah well, the explanation of the colors is reassuring: I hated to think I was merely a Lady of Gray Reputation.
lol I spent hours trying to figure it out when I first saw it don't worry. I asked Raven what it meant and he explained it best he could. And I am the same ILTBY I like to return the favour as well.
The best way is to pay it forward. Give out rep points where you feel they are deserved, rather than who you think gave you rep points. If a post really seems to excel, for instance it nicely answers a difficult question or clears up a misunderstanding, then consider adding to the rep of the user. Sometimes, though, you may see a post that you feel is obnoxious or argumentative, but not to the level of reporting it to the mods. If it really irks you, you can also express that with a negative rep "gift". In general, I would hope that these are very sparingly used, though.
lol well that is so that you can't play favouritism as well ILTBY and so that you have to give others rep points as well hehehe
Yeah, I do But I also feel it's deserved when someone has given me some good rep. I mostly give it to people whose pieces I felt were very enjoyable, but also helpful and friendly posts. I've never wanted to give someone bad rep, it feels too mean Well I've felt the need to give it to you on more than one occasion
I gave yoyu some rep a while back for a deserving post. Trouble is not everyone uses it. But you'll recieve it sometimes I get a spurt then i don't get any for a month or more. I guess its on our posts and actions.
As this thread evidences, many people don't know what reputation comes from or how it works. In truth, about the only real significance of reputation points is being able to give reputation points. Other than that it's a decoration on the user pane that means only as much as viewers associate with it. Frankly, I think posts themselves mean much more in terms of real reputations.
the way I found it was by clicking on all the things I didn't understand the purpose of. I do that and figure if I screw it up somebody can always fix my computer. are there any buttons not to push on this site? It is fun to send these anonymously.
Absolutely, although sometimes its nice to know that people really liked your post. I don't tend to give rep. points unless I find something particularly helpful/useful/good etc... and I think I have only ever given negative points once.
Likewise. I tend to reward helpful reviews with reputation, but the not being able to give to the same person often stumps me, because there are a few people on this site who are very helpful indeed
I have done that also, Kit, especially when a newcomer puts in a well-thought critique to someone's work as one of their first actions on the site.
