Respected Authors divulge 'rules for writing'

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by jannert, Aug 25, 2013.

Just saw this and thought I'd pass it on. Elmore Leonard's 10 rules of writing got this started, but the wide range of authors chosen to contribute to the exercise demonstrate that there are many many legitimate ways to approach writing, and to get the job done!

I've discussed this with one of the mods, who agrees that it's not spam!

I cannot see how this would be regarded as spam. It is information offered for consideration. As a forum of writers and aspirants, I would think a finer care for the meaning of words would be de rigueur. I, for one, thank you for the info, Jan. :)

Nice link Jannert! At first Benjamin's rule of don't write an idea down too fast had me thinking, what? -Who waits to write out an idea? But then after thinking about it I know what he means. I've had several major ideas over the years and jotted them down but I really had to let them stew before they actually could turn into something special. Good tips.

This is a great link! Thanks!

And thank you to E.B. White, for softening the advice he and Strunk gave in The Elements of Style:

"Writing is not an exercise in excision, it’s a journey into sound. How about ‘tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow’? One tomorrow would suffice, but it’s the other two that have made the thing immortal."

Where's blackstar? I kinda want to smack him over the head with that line!

What surprised (and pleased) me was that they all focus on different things. They all have different ways of working, different goals for their writing. Some I agree with more than others, but they all have worthwhile points to make. And some surprised me.

Excellent read jannert. I can identify with a few points, and already feeling better about letting my stories stew for a while before writing them. I'm glad it's not procrastination :D

Nice article, and more than a few I like, but I particularly like the last in the list from Michael Lewis:

“When you’re trying to create a career as a writer, a little delusional thinking goes a long way.”
