You know, those good ol' fashioned treasure hunt stories. Does anyone has some of those books in mind?
Off the top of my head, King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard seems to be the cornerstone for many modern-day adventure stories (or so the back of the B&N version of the book claims). Might be a good place to start. It's not too long, either.
