    Manchester shaken by sixth quake

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Raven, Aug 30, 2007.

A sixth earthquake in a month has hit Manchester, according to the British Geological Survey.

A spokesman said the tremor was felt in the city centre at 5.46am and measured 2.4 on the Richter scale.

He said: "Much of the reports were of rumbling and faint shaking. Some people said their beds rattled and moved. One person said a building creaked."

The spokesman continued: "An earthquake that size doesn't do damage."

Manchester has experienced five earthquakes already this month, between August 10 and August 23, with the highest magnitude measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale.

The British Geological Survey said they were also located in the area where 150 tremors occurred in an earthquake swarm between October 2002 and January 2003.

A spokesman said: "It's special when it happens in a city because more people report it.

"We have earthquakes of this magnitude occurring all the time, about nine a year on average."

Well to be fair yours was aimed at the undesirability of Hull. Mine was simply aimed at the fact that Manchester is a long way away from Hull...

England is tiny, so distances don't matter.

lol. Apparently the southwest/great southern of Western Australia between Albany and Esperence (not sure, and didn't catch the news) got hit with a 5.6 earthquake the other night.

My Partner and I thought we felt something but seeing as it was around midnight, we sort of thought we were tired. But yeah! Earthquake! They don't happen that often down here. I mean, they probably do at smaller scales but not really at that magnitude. And It probably hit out woop-woop (middle of nowhere! :p) because otherwise it would of been more reports if there was damage etc.

If thats a win, I think its more of a Pyrrhic victory than anything else.

I live in Manchester and nobody felt a thing.

On local news, a man said he heard a creak and a groan, but that later turned out to be the wife.

Is that a remark about the quake's location, or a commentary on the residents of Manchester? ;)
