Upon reading this I thought of the film Red Dawn.

Never seen it. But you have to agree, that situation is best described as "universally humped".

I'd say we are in for much more then another Cold War. That only involved a handful of countries. Now there are all sorts of countries that don't like us. This one will be very tricky to get out of and I don't see our next President as willing to take it on - they will deal with it, but I don't think they will "take it on."

Aw, I wanted to point that out. Oh well. But I think that phrase is really weird, especially with a Companion on board.

I think it's awesome :p That and shiny. I also use rutting a lot, but I'm sure I've heard that outside the show...

Anyway, this is drifting off topic, particularly when we have a Firefly/Serenity thread.

If I'm forced to put my faith in those two, I'm moving.

    No war please!

Russia has supplied Iran with surface-to-air missiles. The Syrian president went not to long ago to buy weapons. It’s been reported that Iran launched a missile into space. US warships arrived in Georgia.

I’m not sure how it’s going to play out, but Russia could cause some serious damage. There have been light dealings between Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, and Venezuela (a country very close to Cuba). China isn’t happy about the quad. It’s America, Japan, Australia and India that sometimes do naval war games with each other. The Quad did this close to China’s waters. It pissed them off.

I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out. I just hope that the people in powerful positions chill out!!!

Man I wouldnt hold my breath on political leaders deciding to just chill out. They arent about to rip billies and just be like "well, i admit it, we were wrong. best we just take a step back lads." In a perfect world maybe.

It's all rather tense at the moment, but I think they aren't pissed enough just yet to break out in to war. Give it a few years. I think if it's going to happen, 2010/2011 are the years.

The problem is, it's not their lives they are risking.

I thought we were to be honest.

Sure, which is half the problem. Sometimes I firmly believe that a lot of the wars in the world are just personal gripes between ego-driven world leaders, and covered by religion or oil. Cynical I know but hard to avoid.

    Is the Cold War Back?

    US Ambassador Expelled from Venezuala

Is it just me, or is the world taking a turn for the sixties/seventies again?

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has expelled the US Ambassador to his nation on charges that that he was aiding in a conspiracy to overthrow the Venezuelan leader (A charge echoed some time ago by Bolivia). At the same time, Chavez has ordered his ambassador to Washington leave the US and return home. This coincides with the deployment of two Russian Bombers to Venezuela and the announcement that elements of the Russian Navy will be preforming exercises in the region within the year.

Its not mentioned in the above article, but another suggested that Diplomatics may be restored at the end of the Bush Administration, or at the entrance of a new Administration.

Is it just me or does this feel like the bush wacking of the Cold War? We got the incident in Georgia, the whole Missile Defense System mess, so on and so forth.

I just don't see it. The level of tension between the US and Russsia doesn't even begin to compare with that in the fifties and sixties. The fear was so pervasive that people were building fallout shelters in their back yards and conducting civil defense drills regularly. There is tension now, but it's nothing next to the nuclear chess game played out back then.

The Gary Powers U-2 spy plane incident, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, nuclear submarines cruising just outsde territorial waters, the DEWS network, the nuclear arms race - it was a huge buildup with unprecedented saber rattling.

Who else here remembers Nikita Kruschchev banging his shoe on the table at the UN for attention?

There is already a thread on this theme, so I'm going to merge the two.

Cog is 100% right. As a child in elementary school, we had nuclear attack drills in which we were told to hide under our desks . . . like that was going to accomplish something.

I don't believe the "Cold War" is back, but I worry that the current escalation of tensions between Russia and the rest of the world could lead to the production of new nuclear warheads. Nukes are the "big stick" that gives a nation teeth in its threats.

Oh yes, the old "Duck and Cover" films they had to show us in class.

That way our charred irradiated ashes would be neatly piled. :D

    thank you.

Just my opinion, but Russia are just flexing some flabby arms, i mean compared to the fear they once braught upon the world, today it seems Russia had become a bit of a joke nation, and well maybe they've just had enough with it. Doesnt mean we are going back to the 60/70s again.

The world forgets to fast these days of days past.

But anyway, cold war? i dont think so
