    Santa Claus

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by Adenosine Triphosphate, Dec 23, 2014.

With all the potential ramifications in mind, is it wrong to deceive kids about Santa Claus and act like he's real?

Nope, they love the idea of magic. They all figure it out and I've never heard of a kid being annoyed with a parent for telling them there was a Santa Claus.

When my nephew was finally told there was no Santa Claus, he broke down in tears. My sister and her husband thought he was inconsolable over the loss of a childhood fantasy, but instead when they asked why he was crying he said "you've been lying to me for six years!" :D

I figured out the truth sometime between fifth and sixth grade. I felt pretty sad, not because Santa wasn't real, per se, but because I had so firmly believed he was. I felt stupid. And lied to.

Come to think of it, I had an enormous cognitive leap right before sixth grade started. It's the first time I was recognizably my analytical, skeptical self. That may have had something to do with my insight.

You guys need to rethink what you are saying. Santa Clause isn't real? That's absurd! Of course he's real! You can see him in a child's imagination, a parent's heart, and in an elder's memories. The physical Santa Clause doesn't exist, but Santa Clause does exist if you understand what I'm saying.

My five year old knows a whole lot about Santa from sources other than us.

My mother, for one, was so pissed that for us there was never a question about Santa's reality. It was nice to pretend, but we never believed.

Can't relate. :D Unfortunately, there are no such myths in our culture--well, there are I guess, but my parents have never told me any such things. They always were honest about various phenomena, including, in their own subtle way, sex. I mean, if you exclude imaginary friends, and religious beliefs (because that is something you continue to believe as an adult, if you still affiliate yourself with that religion). Interesting! One of my Psychology professors really abhorred such "lies", so to speak. He thought they deceived the child into believing unrealistic ideas.

I do think that if you know about sex, you should not believe in Santa.

When I was a kid, it was a heck of a lot easier to believe in Santa than to believe in sex.

And if they saw you having sex with Santa Claus? Well, that's just going to screw 'me up for life.

We are in a really unusual position in that my niece and nephew are complete opposites. My nephew is just old enough to understand the concept of Santa Claus, and so we want him to believe in it, but my niece has a genius level IQ and at age 5 has already worked it out using some rather abstract logic. So ... what can you do? :/

I think I was 17 when I finally realised he wasn't real. I was a bit upset that my parents hadn't told me earlier as it would have made school a little easier, and that first year in work. I find it quite embarrassing looking back.

I myself realized it when I lost my faith in God, I was about 5, 6 or 7 years old. I kept the act up for a few years after that because I didn't want to upset them, but it seemed even then silly to believe in Santa when I didn't believe in the supernatural.

Well, he's pretty much the only employer of toy-making elves and flying reindeer. Those demographics would be hurting if it weren't for good ol' Santa.

Fear not! It would have no effect. Santa is from the planet Krypton.

You've got something in mind. Why don't you just tell us what you're talking about?
