Say, did Gene Roddenberry write any Star Trek books?

I don't mean like books based on the show or films, but what I mean is, did he have an actual book or story he wrote that he may have at least based Star Trek on? Wikipedia doesn't make any mention, so I must assume the answer is no, but I still would like to get a more concrete answer.

It is my understanding that Roddenberry based the series, in the broad strokes, on the 1956 sci-fi film Forbidden Planet.
