    Second World War Books

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Eunoia, May 1, 2010.

I posted this in a History forum that I completely forgot I had joined and thought I'd post it here too but anyway, I'm really interested in the world wars, particularly the Second World War. I want to write a story about it/set in that period and I was wondering whether anyone could recommend any particular books - either fiction or non-fiction -about it that I should read for research say?

Not my area of expertise, Sarah.

And contrary to what some around here think....no.... I'm not old enough to give you a personal account either. ;)

The following are novels off the top of my head.

    Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
    Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester
Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett

Ah! Gravity's Rainbow is actually on my 'to read' list. Thanks, thirdwind. :)

    Try these on...

Here are a couple that might be good:

    1. The Book Thief - Mark Zusak
    2. Jack Daws - Ken Follett

Just go to any library website and do a subjet search for Nazi and you'll get hundreds, depending on the size of the library. Go into the Toronto public library site and you get over 1000, though that is unusual, Toronto's public library system being one of the largest in Canada and the States.

Have a look at Max Hastings (Armageddon, Overlord) and Antony Beevor (Stalingrad, Berlin)

Check out almost any Alan Furst novel. He specializes in spy novels set in Europe during WWII.

Another one to add to your list.
The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk. I'm just starting in this one :)

Best of luck with it. :)
It took me a little over a month to finish it. I found the constant repeat of rank title a bit too much, but it's mind chilling nonetheless.
